He stood outside her door a full ten minutes after it closed, listening to nothing at all, and couldn’t for the life of him work out why he had not just walked away.
‘What are you doing?’
The question bothered him the way it always did lately, patient and unanswered.
He had built Ridgeline on instinct, on knowing exactly what he wanted the second he saw it and taking it without apology. He didn’t linger outside doors. He didn’t stand in cold hallways turning a woman’s laugh over in his mind.
Maybe he was doing this wrong. Maybe a woman freshly thrown from a horse, freshly grieving a husband, freshly drowning in more secrets than any one person should have to carry, didn’t need a king pacing outside her room hoping she would open it again.
But then he knew only one thing for sure, standing there in the dark.
He was in love with her. Fully, foolishly, past the point of pretending otherwise to himself, past the point where a man of his position should ever let himself fall for anything he couldn’t fully control.
He turned to go.
“Found yourself a new whore?”
Elena stood at the end of the hallway, arms crossed, chin lifted in the usual way that always preceded her worst behaviour.
“Say that again,” Kaelen said, very quietly, “and see what happens.”
“I only speak what everyone in this house already whispers. That woman comes crawling in half drowned twice now, and you drop every single thing you own to catch her.”
“Careful, Elena.”
“Careful?” She laughed, sharp and humourless. “You want to talk to me about careful. I have watched you rearrange this entire household around a married stranger for weeks now, and you want to lecture me about how I speak.”
He crossed the distance between them in three strides and caught her jaw in one hand, hard enough to make sure she understood exactly how close she stood to a line she shouldn’t test.
“Listen to me,” he growled. “You might be the daughter of a beta. I might have made a promise to your father, years ago, before either of us understood what that promise would cost. But until the day I stand up and honour it, you don’t raise your voice at me, and you don’t put filth in your mouth about a woman who has done nothing to earn it.”
“You promised me.”
“I promised your father.” His grip didn’t loosen. “There is a difference, and you know it as well as I do. A 1/4

promise made across a bargaining table between two old men is not the same as a vow I made with my own voice, to your face, meaning it.”
“That’s a very convenient distinction for a man who wants to escape it.”
“Maybe it is.” Something flickered behind his own eyes then, something almost like guilt, gone as quickly as it came. “That doesn’t make it untrue.”
With that he let her go.
She stumbled back a step, one hand rising to her own jaw, rage and hurt tangled together on her face in a way that almost, almost made him regret it.
“This isn’t over,” Elena said, and walked away before he could answer.

He sat alone in his study long after, a glass untouched at his elbow, and let his mind do the thing it had been doing for weeks now without his permission.
Thinking about Aurelia.
He had known beautiful women. He was a king.
Beauty came standard with the position, offered up on every side by people who wanted something from him. But none of it had ever once moved him the way she did without trying, without knowing, without any performance in it at all.
The way she bit her lip when she was deciding whether to trust him. The stubborn tilt of her chin right before she said no to something she clearly wanted to say yes to. The sound of her laugh in that taxi, startled out of her like something she had forgotten she still owned.
He had spent his whole life taking what he wanted the moment he wanted it. Kingdoms didn’t survive on patience. Men who hesitated lost everything to men who didn’t, and he had built Ridgeline into what it was by never once being the man who hesitated.
She was the first thing he had ever wanted that couldn’t just be taken.
‘How does a man win a heart that is still busy grieving another one?’
He didn’t have an answer. He had tried charm, and it made her laugh, and laughter wasn’t the same as trust. He had tried honesty, and she flinched from it half the time, as if honesty itself had become a language she no longer knew how to hear without getting scared.
For all his certainty about everything else in his life, this was the one door he couldn’t just kick open, and it maddened him in a way very little ever had.
Just then a knock came, sharp, and the young tech from the computer room let himself in without waiting to be told.
“Boss. You need to see this.”

“Not now.”
“It is about the drive.” There was a pause. “It is about Aurelia.”

Kaelen was on his feet before the sentence finished, every thought of Elena and betrothals and years of quiet unpaid debts scattering out of his head at once.
There was only one thing in this house that reliably moved him that quickly, and everyone under his roof had long since learned her name.
