I had given her twenty minutes. At nineteen, a gunshot cracked across the dark, and I was out of the car before I knew it.
I hadn’t wanted to wait in that car. Every part of me had argued against it. But the plan called for me to stay back and out of sight, so that no one could ever tie a Valerius to the building, and I agreed, because in the end I always agreed to the plan.
So without thinking too much about it, I crossed the road.
The back of the building stood open, and inside, the air was wrong. I knew it the moment I stepped through. Too quiet. Too still. And under the smell of concrete and cold, blood.
I went up.
Her scent was everywhere on the back stairs. So I quickly followed it, up four floors and along a black corridor, past a door still hanging open on a dark office, and down again by another stair, tracking her the only way that had never once failed me.
But it failed me on the ground floor.
Her scent ran strongly down a long hallway toward the rear exit, and then, ten steps short of the green light of the door, it just stopped. As though she had walked to that spot and been lifted straight out of the world.
I stood there breathing it in, hunting for the rest of her, and found instead the thing that had taken her place.
Another wolf.
Not mine. Not my blood. A cold and wild scent laid right over hers. And I knew that kind of scent. I knew the breed of thing that wore it. And the knowing turned my blood to ice water.
I found the guard six feet away, slumped against the wall.
Dead. His throat was open, and not by any blade. Four deep furrows tore down through his collar and the meat beneath it, curved and spaced too wide for any tool a man’s hand could hold.
Claws.
A wolf had walked into my city, on my watch, and it had taken my wife and left a body cooling on the floor behind it like a note left on a door.
I had caught the edge of that scent once before, faint, on the men who had tried her in the alley weeks ago. A wolf that crossed my borders and left no fear behind it, because it didn’t believe my borders were real. There was only one creature in this part of the world bold enough and strong enough to do that and walk away whistling. But I didn’t let myself think of the name. Not yet. Names had a way of making things true.
I crouched there in the dark with the dead man and the empty place where her scent ended, and for one long moment I couldn’t make myself move at all.
