Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Rieck’s POV

“You don’t know what you’re doing, Aurelia.”

“Try me,” she said again. “Or don’t, Rieck. Walk out. I’ll understand.”

She was giving me an exit.

That irritated me more than anything else she’d said.

I took a step back, my hand dropping from her throat.

“You’re weak,” I spat. The word tasted wrong the second I spoke it. But I said it anyway. “Any child you carried would come out weak. Try again in a year when you’ve learned what kind of house you live in.”

I turned for the door.

But then, to my surprise, her hand closed on my arm.

“Don’t,” she whispered. “Don’t leave and tell me it’s because I’m not enough. If you’re going, go because you don’t want me. Say that.”

But I did want her. And whatever reason she was reaching for me with, the contract, my father, her own ruined pride, I didn’t care. A man like me takes what is given and calls it a Tuesday.

So I turned.

I didn’t say a word as I slowly wrapped my arms around her waist and lifted her off the ground. Her breath was ragged as I set her down on the edge of the bed with her back to me, one hand placed flat between her shoulder blades, guiding her forward until she rested her palms on the duvet.

“Last chance, little wife.”

“I heard you loud and clear the first time.”

My lips found the back of her neck. But I didn’t kiss her.

I dragged my lips along the skin just behind her ear, slowly, and I felt the shiver travel all the way down her spine into my hand.

“Tell me if you want me to stop.”

“I won’t.”

Without thinking, I flipped the hem of her dress up to her waist.

Then I slid my hand between her thighs through the thin cotton underneath, and the heat I found there almost made me wild.

Leaning my forehead against the back of her head, I took a deep breath through my teeth and then tore the

cotton apart.

She gasped as I slowly took the torn pieces off her and dropped them on the floor. My hand came back, and this time there was nothing between my fingers and her skin, and she was already slick, already ready, already everything I had spent two weeks pretending not to want.

“Rieck.”

“I know.”

I worked her with my fingers until her arms started to shake and the duvet was fisted in her knuckles. With my other hand, I undid my belt and zipper and then pushed my slacks down just enough before kicking them aside.

I positioned myself behind her and placed one hand at her hip and the other flat on the small of her back, keeping her steady, keeping her where I wanted her.

Then, I pushed in.

She was so tight that it made me moan. But I stopped halfway as I felt her adjust and felt the tremor in her thighs. She was holding herself up by her palms and nothing else.

“Breathe, Aurelia.”

She took a breath, and I started to move.

The first stroke was slow. The second was slower. The third was not slow at all. My hand moved from her back to her hip and I took her the way a man takes a thing he has been refusing himself for a very long time, hard, steady, deep, the bed creaking under her, her small cry breaking against the duvet every time I drove into her.

I wanted it to be quick. I wanted to use her the way a cold man uses a woman and walk into the bathroom afterward with nothing on my face.

But it didn’t go like that.

She turned her head on the duvet. Her cheek flushed, her lip caught between her teeth, her eyes closed. She reached one shaking hand back over her shoulder towards my face, a blind fumble, looking for something to hold onto.

My hand came up to catch hers and put it away, but I hesitated. Her fingers hovered in the air and mine hovered around her wrist.

I couldn’t do it.

I couldn’t push her hand away.

I cursed under my breath and caught her wrist, but I did not push her off. I laced my fingers through hers instead and brought her hand back to the bed and pressed it there, and I leaned down over her back until my mouth was against the shell of her ear.

“Don’t touch my face, dear wife.” My voice was gravel. “Not tonight. You can have the rest of me.”

Her answer was a sound, not a word.

I kept moving. Harder now. My other hand slid up her belly under the dress, found her breast and dragged a thumb across it. She slowly arched her back and made a sound I felt in my teeth.

The room smelled like her now. Skin and a faint trace of something floral from her shampoo and, under it, the first edge of the wilder thing my wolf could smell even when I couldn’t.

Then I felt her tightening around me. I felt it start in her thighs and climb her spine and I angled against her just right, because I wanted to hear it before I finished, I wanted to be the reason for it, I wanted it on my skin.

“Rieck.”

“I know.”

“Rieck…”

“Say it.”

She broke. A ragged cry, her whole body shuddering, her fingers squeezing mine so hard I thought a bone would give.

I followed her in three strokes. I pressed my forehead against her shoulder blade and breathed through something I was not going to name. My hand was still laced through hers on the bed.

After a few seconds, I immediately pulled out and stepped back.

Neither of us said a word.

She stayed braced on her elbows, breathing hard, her dress still gathered at her waist. I stared at her a second too long and saw the red mark I had left on her hip and the tremor that had not left her thighs and the way she was trying to get her breath under control without letting me see.

“Get some sleep,” I said suddenly. My voice was rougher than I wanted. “You’re tired.”

“Rieck.”

“Sleep, Aurelia.”

With that, I turned and walked into the bathroom and shut the door behind me.

The office was very quiet at ten the next morning.

I sat behind my desk and stared out the window at my city.

I had signed three documents, but I had read none of them. My coffee had gone cold and I hadn’t noticed until the steam stopped rising. I was thinking about her arched back under my hand. I was thinking about her
