Adrian stepped aside, gesturing toward the doorway.
Isabel saw a highly authoritative elderly man. If he was the one who conducted the test, then the report was undoubtedly accurate.
Suddenly, a thought struck her. Perhaps the pill Edmund had given her contained no harmful substances. But the ones used to save her back then might have. A colorless, odorless, harmful gas was well within his capabilities to create. In the heat of the moment, she hadn’t had time to consider it.
“Isabel, if you save the boy, I’ll let him go. If you insist on being stubborn, then it’s a life for a life.”
Isabel had been planning to save him anyway. But this report had caught her completely off guard.
“This is a joint case between Aurelia City and Westbridge. The kid is legally registered as Julian’s son. Celvaria can’t protect him. You should think carefully.”
He whispered this in her ear before turning and leaving.
Isabel’s face turned pale. She looked at the group of officials. None of them had entered the room except Adrian, but it was clear they weren’t just going to let this go. They were waiting for her decision.
“What’s wrong?” Evelyn tried to look at the file in her hand, but Isabel blocked it.
“It’s nothing,” Isabel said. “I’m going to handle this. None of you need to follow me.”
After she left, Evelyn looked at Julian.
Something flashed in Julian’s eyes, but his expression remained unreadable. “What’s the use of looking at me? I was so far away from that file, I couldn’t have read it even with perfect vision.”

Isabel went to Oliver’s room and fed him the X-1.
Adrian stepped closer. “You really think that gives you leverage over me? Isabel, you’re far too naive. Things are never just black and white, right and wrong. I suppose it’s no wonder. You stayed at home for six years. How would you know how cruel the outside world can be?”
Isabel didn’t know why, but she raised her hand and slapped him. Perhaps it was his infuriatingly smug expression. Always so high and mighty, so cold and arrogant. For the past six years, seeing it only brought her pain and sorrow. Now, she just wanted to slap him again.
“How many times have you slapped me now?” Adrian ran his tongue along the inside of his cheek and actually smiled. “I’ve been too lenient with you.”
The smile was sinister. Isabel was reminded of the time in the Grey Zone when he had pinned her to the bed. She quickly tried to sidestep him and leave the room.
Adrian grabbed her wrist and pulled her back. “Don’t start with your right hand again. If you care about it, then don’t struggle. If it gets injured, you’ll just blame me.”
Isabel was furious but held her temper. She pretended to let him hold her, and when he wasn't paying attention, she pulled out a needle. But Adrian dodged it again, capturing both of her hands.
“I’ve blocked that move so many times. You should really learn a new one.”
