Isabel sat down at the dining table, and Oliver stood on his chair, busy serving her some oatmeal.
She reached out to stop him. "Sit down."
Oliver obediently sat.
Martha came out with a dish, smiling. "He's certainly become much more thoughtful."
Isabel just smiled in response.
Oliver peeled a boiled egg for Isabel.
Isabel asked, "How long has it been since you went to school?"
Oliver stammered, "I wasn't going for a while... but it's the holiday break now."
Isabel had forgotten about the school break.
She took a bite of the egg and said to Martha, "I'm off today. Let's go shopping together."
"Good idea," Martha said. "I can tidy up a bit beforehand."
With the plan set, they headed to the supermarket after breakfast.
Technically, given the Blackwell family's status, the supermarket delivered fresh ingredients every day, so they didn't need to go shopping.
But Isabel loved the feeling of browsing in a supermarket.
She used to wish that her husband and child could join her one day.
That dream never came true before the divorce.
And now, she no longer wanted it.
"What kind of filling should we get for the ravioli?" Martha asked Isabel.
Isabel thought for a moment. "One meat and one vegetable. There aren't many of us. How about meat and spinach, and cheese and herb?"
Then she remembered something. "He probably won't like the herb one. Let's do a three-cheese filling instead."
Indeed, there were only a few of them celebrating the holiday at Halcyon Hills Residence.
Adrian's recovery was still uncertain.
As for old Mrs. Blackwell, they were expected to visit her for the holiday; it wasn't customary for the elderly matriarch to come to them.
"Mom, I'm not a picky eater anymore."
Isabel glanced at him. "You won't like it."
Oliver gave a little "oh." "I'll listen to whatever Mom says."
They bought quite a bit and were ready to leave.
They had five or six large shopping bags.
"Go rush them. I need to be able to move before the holidays."
Daniel hesitated. "Perhaps... you could ask Mrs. Blackwell?"
Adrian shot him a cold glare. "She'd love nothing more than for me not to come home for the holidays."
Daniel wanted to say, *You haven't come home for the holidays in years. Now you want to, and she's ignoring you.*
But he didn't dare say it. He just followed his orders and went to press Dr. Lawson for an update.

Two days before the holiday, Isabel went to the lab.
Not all the technicians could leave for the break; some had to stay behind to monitor the drug data.
Felix was one of those staying.
She had learned from Old Mr. Foster that he had come up through scholarships and had no family.
So she wanted to invite him to celebrate with them.
"Would that be an inconvenience?" Felix was flattered.
"Not at all. It's just me, my son, and our wonderful housekeeper at home. You don't need to watch the X-1 data constantly. Come over for dinner on New Year's Eve."
