And if she slept with Edmund, Oliver would definitely throw a fit.
The whining would get on her nerves.
So it was better to keep them separate.
“I’ll bring you some sweet rice cakes tomorrow. You sleep with your dad tonight.”
Julian managed to get Edmund into the car. Once they were on their way, Edmund asked, “Does Mommy not want us anymore?”
Julian snorted. “You’ve asked that a million times, King.”
“And I’ve answered it a million times. It’s not about wanting or not wanting. Don’t be so possessive.”
Edmund was unhappy. “Is it because I disobeyed her and made that poison?”
Julian patted his head. “No. But you have to remember, that’s her biological son. The little brat made a mistake, but it’s not a life-or-death grudge.”
Edmund’s position was admittedly weak, but Julian’s was different.
“Are you just giving up like this?” he asked.
Julian was still smiling. “I respect all of her decisions.”
Edmund, despite his intelligence, didn’t understand. “Don’t you like Mommy a lot? Are you just going to watch her be unhappy with that bad man?”
“That bad man is being punished, isn’t he?” Julian said. “For someone like Adrian, being unable to move is a special kind of torture.”
Edmund still didn’t get it. “Then why doesn’t Mommy take this chance to divorce him?”
Julian didn’t know either, but he felt that Isabel must have a plan.
“Why so many questions? You’re giving me a headache. Be quiet.”
***
Isabel gave Martha a holiday bonus.
Martha smiled. “I get a bonus from you every year. I don’t have much to give you in return.”
“You do more than enough to earn it,” Isabel said. “It’s late, you should get some sleep. Good night.”
“Good night to you too. Happy New Year.”
“I hope next year brings you true happiness,” she added.
She stepped closer and sighed, seeing that Adrian could only move his eyes and mouth. “Mr. Blackwell, why do you have to make things so hard for yourself?”
“The old mistress wanted me to tell you to stop being so stubborn. You were the one in the wrong. Maybe a different path would be easier.”
“If you grant the divorce willingly, Isabel might remember you with a bit of fondness.”
“Then, when you try to win her back, it will actually mean something. Instead of just trapping her in this marriage.”
Adrian’s expression was neutral. “Susan, do you really think I can trap her with this marriage now?”
“She could walk in right now, take my hand, and force me to sign the divorce papers.”
Susan knew Adrian well. That excuse might work on others, but not her. “If you don’t give the word, who would dare process your divorce?”
Adrian didn’t respond.
Having relayed her message, Susan didn’t linger and turned to leave.
Daniel Price walked her out, then came back, opened the container, and started to feed Adrian.
But he heard Adrian say, “If I were confident I could win her back, I obviously wouldn’t want things to get to this point.”
