"The best way you can make it up to me is to divorce me."
Isabel's tone grew colder. "Letting me be happy is the best compensation, not trapping me by your side to rot."
"I admit I hurt you, but I never fell in love with anyone else. I didn't betray our marriage. You, on the other hand, started a relationship with Julian before we were divorced. That's cheating."
Isabel laughed, exasperated. "Right. So you tricked me into coming here to listen to this bullshit again."
"Adrian, you can refuse to get divorced. Fine. Stay paralyzed in bed for the rest of your life. It's not like you can stop me from doing whatever I want."
She turned to leave.
Adrian quickly grabbed her arm.
Even as the emotional stress sent pain through his chest, he didn't let go. His whole body was trembling, as was his voice.
"You keep insisting on a divorce, but will that erase everything that happened? Your right hand won't get better just because we're divorced."
Isabel pulled her arm free. "I don't want to hear it. You have half an hour left."
"Just tell me: divorce, or no divorce."
Adrian's lips tightened into a thin line.
Isabel walked out without another word.
The director was sweating bullets. He offered a dry, apologetic smile. "You should really try talking to your wife. Even if it's not your fault, you have to take the blame. You can't reason with a woman logically; what's most important is validating her emotions."
Adrian didn't know how to do that. After a moment of hesitation, he asked for advice.
The director cleared his throat, feeling he could finally offer some useful counsel. "Well, to be honest, the problems between you and your wife are already quite serious. At this point, her demands are what matter most."
"She's filled with resentment that can't be released by just yelling at you or hitting you. You could grant her the divorce first. With your charm, winning her back shouldn't be a problem."
"You see, a person might not love only one person in their lifetime, but the people they fall for tend to be of a similar type."
There's a certain chemistry that draws people together.
Some people like younger partners, some prefer older ones. Some are attracted to strength, others to gentleness.
A person who has always been drawn to powerful partners isn't going to leave one and then find happiness with a simple, unassuming person.
Even if they're disheartened at the time, that kind of relationship won't last.
"Hello?"
"Mrs. Black—"
"My name is Isabel Ashford."
The director chuckled nervously, glossing over his mistake. "You haven't left yet, have you? Could you come back? Mr. Blackwell has agreed to the divorce."
"I don't need to come inside. If he's agreed, just process it. And don't give me any nonsense about a cooling-off period."
Adrian took the phone. "How will you know we're divorced if you don't come in?"
Isabel hung up, got out of the car, and walked back inside.
The director personally handled the process on the system.
They had already filled out the necessary paperwork before.
He smiled apologetically at Isabel. "The cooling-off period is mandatory. There's nothing I can do about it."
Isabel kicked Adrian. "You figure it out."
