“I don’t really understand why you would give up your career for love and stay at home. I have more than enough money to hire staff. You didn’t need to handle all the household chores by yourself. I married a wife, not a maid. I don’t need a maid.”

The car screeched to a halt, pulling over into a temporary parking spot on the side of the road.

Isabel turned to look at him, her face tight. She seemed about to explode with anger, but in the end, she couldn’t get a single word out.

“I’m sorry,” Adrian said, handing her a tissue. “That’s not what I meant…”

“If you can’t drive, I’ll call Daniel. I can’t drive with my hand like this.”

Oliver had been listening to his storybook.

He sensed his father was about to say something important to his mother, so he had stayed quiet in the back.

The sudden stop didn’t jostle him in his car seat, but he felt his mother’s shift in mood.

When he saw his father offer her a tissue, he immediately leaned forward. Seeing that Isabel’s eyes were indeed red, he unbuckled himself.

He got out of the car and opened the passenger-side door. “Adrian, get out.”

“What did you call me?”

Adrian was stunned for a second, then found it amusing. “It’s not what you think,” he explained.

“Mommy’s crying, so you’re wrong. Get out!”

Oliver reached out to pull him, not paying attention to his right hand.

A piercing pain shot through Adrian, but he didn’t make a sound as he got out of the car.

Oliver climbed into the passenger seat to comfort his mother. “Mommy, my fists are really strong now. I’ll beat up Daddy for you. Don’t be sad.”

Isabel glanced at him and said simply, “Go sit in the back.”

Oliver obediently returned to his seat, slamming the passenger door shut and glaring at Adrian.

The child hadn't noticed, but Isabel had. Adrian’s face was pale, and beads of sweat dotted his forehead. He was clearly in pain.

But she paid him no mind and drove away.

Adrian watched the car leave without a word.

When Daniel arrived, he found Adrian collapsed on the ground.

Perhaps it was the magic of blood ties, or maybe it was because they were both male.

Oliver eventually became very attached to him.

At the time, he didn't think much of it, assuming that since Isabel had raised the boy, their bond wouldn't be threatened by Oliver getting close to him.

But he never expected Selena to be stirring up trouble behind the scenes.

But he still didn't take it seriously, thinking it was just a rebellious phase, as Oliver often complained that Isabel was too strict.
