Chapter 183
HUNTER
The courtyard smelled like her. That hit me before anything
I also caught cherry blossoms and stone warmed by the sun, and underneath it, something wounded. Something sharp, and angry, and vicious. I hadn’t realised how much I missed the way he looked at me, even when she hated me.
Her eyes blazed at me.
The swing slowed beneath her as if the air itself had thickened. Her body went still, and in that moment, her wolf flashed through my mind. An apex predator. An omega who could stand toe-to-toe with me.
I was in for the fight of my life, and in that moment, I was certain I would lose. But it was alright. I had come prepared. I had no other choice but to endure until she accepted that we were not done. That we would never be done.
She stood slowly. I focused on her and not the man who’d been ting so comfortably beside her.
“You’re trespassing,” she said. Her voice was steady and laced with all her hatred for me.
“I’m not.”
“On whose authority?”
I let the silence stretch, and then said, “Mine.”
The shift in the air was immediate. I hadn’t spoken my title out loud, but it crashed down between us like a sledgehammer. The Lycan King, the one who ruled all others. Her face paled, and I felt her devastation. And then only seconds later, her fury leapt out at me like a blow to my chest.
“Leave,” Kitty growled.
Her eyes flashed violet, and she bared her teeth. It was the fierce that matched my own, but she was fighting her instincts where and my magic reached out to hers.
I’d ever seen her. Beneath that anger, I sensed desperation long since given in to mine. Even now, my blood warmed,
Rivers rose and stepped in front of her, blocking her from my view.
“Maybe now isn’t the time,” he said.
So he could worm his way in while Kitty hated me? Not a chance
“It’s not your place to speak for her,” I growled.
“Then whose place is it?” Kitty hissed, going around Rivers to sp her rage in my face. “Yours? You’ve come here to issue your commands, Your Majesty?”
Something the size of a fist lodged in my throat. I’d never once se my title against anyone, but the blood debt between our families had skewed both our views. Up until she walked away, I been planning my revenge on her father.
But what about now? Couldn’t she see me for who I really was, despite what she’d heard?
“No commands,” I said finally. “But I’ve come for a diplomatic vit. It’s my duty”
Kitty staggered back as if my words had struck her. But the sooner she accepted that I was king, the sooner she’d realise she was my queen. Healing wouldn’t come until she heard me out, until she accepted who I was without the bond twisting everything between us.
I sensed Christos and Maria approaching behind me, but didn’turn.
“Your Majesty,” Christos said.
Kitty’s face fell. I could only imagine how she felt hearing those words from the man who had been the only king she’d ever known. I ached to go to her and steady her. To comfort her as I would have done before.
Magic roared in my veins, and somehow I was closer than I remembered moving. Shadows flickered at the edge of my vision. I numbed my mind quickly, and they vanished, but River face and the sliver of fear in the air told me he’d noticed.
“If you’d told us you were coming, we would have been prepared” Maria said, the picture of diplomacy.
“No need for any special treatment,” I said, my gaze still locked on Kitty.
“You’re getting ahead of yourself,” Kitty said. “You will never get any special treatment here.”
She stormed past me down the path. When I turned, she’d walked past her parents without a word and was already at the entrance. With the bond, I would have felt everything directly, not scenting it in the air like she was like everyone else.
“I’d make you a room,” Maria said, “but as you can see, I’m not well enough to host-”
“No need. I don’t need anyone to serve me.”
“You’re actually staying?” Rivers asked.
