She held his hand, lying on the bed, waiting for him to speak. But when he didn’t talk even after several seconds, she tugged on his arms lightly, taking his support to sit up.
She looked back up at him, her lips pursed in a thin line. "Mr. Aiden Winslow, I don’t think I can take this further anymore," she said, drawing in a deep breath. "Everything is feeling too heavy. And I am not the one born to carry loads. So, let’s end this."
Aiden froze in that moment. And even though there wasn’t enough light to see each other clearly, Arwen still clearly saw his expression darkening —shade after shade —not slowly, but rather in the blink of an eye.
She was momentarily taken aback, but soon composed herself, speaking, "Sit." She tugged on his arm to make him sit on the bed, but he stood firm, not moving even an inch.
Furrowing her brows, she looked at him, only to find his face dark and tight as if he was barely restraining himself.
Wasn’t he fine a moment back?
What happened to make him so sullen suddenly?
"I said sit," she repeated, this time tugging at him with force. And he finally sat down, but his expression didn’t ease.
"It seems like you have forgotten," Aiden spoke, looking at her, and for once, his gaze wasn’t gentle on her. "I didn’t ask a lot when you asked me to sign the marriage certificate with you. But I am sure what I wanted, I made it very clear to you, didn’t I?"
Arwen didn’t understand what he meant at first. But she nodded. He did tell her it very clearly, and she did agree with him. "I haven’t forgotten. I still remember you said you wouldn’t do contract marriages. If we sign the certificates, the marriage we will have will be real, and —"
"And real marriages don’t have divorces," he finished her words, "I don’t agree to the divorce."
Arwen nodded, accepting. "Yes, of course —" But then suddenly, it struck her.
Wait! What—?
She paused and stared at him as if he had suddenly grown three heads. "Divorce?" Her voice pitched up high in disbelief. "From where did that come?"
She didn’t mention anything such. Did she?
Aiden’s jaw hardened, and before Arwen could register anything, he leaned forward, taking her lips in desperation.
She wasn’t ready for it, so when it happened, she forgot to breathe through her nose, almost getting suffocated. While her one hand was grabbed by him, she moved the other to tap his shoulders ... vigorously.
But it seemed like, in that moment, he lost all sorts of control. He didn’t let go of her immediately, but instead assaulted her lips like it was the only thing he required to stay alive.
