Zenith’s brows furrowed in confusion when she entered the restaurant and found it empty. This wasn’t any high-end restaurant where people had to queue for months to get a reservation, but it was still a popular one among the netizens.
So, having no customers during the peak hour was simply making no sense.
"This ..." she turned to exchange a gaze with David, a little awkward to ask if he had any clue.
However, he stared back at her as though he was equally clueless. "Although I would have loved to book the entire restaurant for our date, I still don’t have such a capability. In a few years, I might have. But right now ..." he shook his head, and Zenith smiled, understanding his humour.
"I guess someone else booked it. We should ask them once," she said before turning to look for someone around.
And right around the corner, she soon spotted a waitress. She gestured to David once before calling out politely.
"Excuse me!" 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
The waitress turned and looked their way before walking towards them. When she was close enough, Zenith asked, "Oh, we want to know if there is anything special going on here today. There are no customers here."
The waitress’s gaze flicked to look around once before returning to Zenith with a smile. "Ma’am, that’s because we are booked for today. We aren’t accepting any customers. We even put a board outside."
Zenith exchanged another awkward gaze with David. He rubbed his nose gently before speaking on their behalf. "Oh, we are really sorry. We didn’t pay attention to any board outside and walked in like this. We hope we didn’t disturb your guests here."
The waitress shook her head. "No, sir. It’s fine. Our guests haven’t yet arrived."
Zenith smiled in understanding and then said, "Thank you. We would visit some other day." And with that, they were about to turn and leave when, from the other side of the restaurant, a man in his late thirties seemed to be rushing towards them.
For a moment, it felt like he was there to greet someone. But when they turned to look outside and found no one, they were confused.
"What’s wrong, Sir?" the waitress asked, and the man simply shook his head at her before looking straight at Zenith and David to ask.
"Sir, ma’am, why have you been standing here? Please take the seat." He gestured them towards the table, and that only felt more confusing.
Zenith’s gaze flicked to the waitress once before she said, "We heard that your restaurant was booked for the evening and you won’t be accepting any guests."
"Yes, sir," the waitress also turned to look at the manager. "Weren’t we reserved?"
The manager gave an awkward smile before clearing his throat. "You weren’t wrongly informed, ma’am. Our restaurant is exclusively reserved for the evening, but it’s fine if you take a table. We received a call from our guest, and he said that it would be fine as long as your presence doesn’t disturb them. And since you are here already, you can take a table and enjoy the evening."
Zenith looked a little hesitant about that. She turned and looked at David as if asking his suggestion, and he simply shrugged.
"Since we are already here, I don’t think it would be a trouble. But if you suggest some other place, I am fine with even that."
Zenith checked the time on her watch. Although she wasn’t running on any strict schedule, she was planning to return and rest early.
Looking at the manager, she asked once again, "Are you sure it won’t create trouble for you?"
The manager smiled and then shook his head. "No, ma’am. We would be absolutely fine."
"Then we will take a table that side," Zenith gestured towards a table that wasn’t in the farthest corner, but at the same time, it wasn’t the centre of attraction.
The manager looked in the direction she pointed and then nodded before turning to the waitress to say, "You go and serve them. Make sure they are well looked after."
The waitress nodded and then walked Zenith and David towards the table.
David was truly a gentleman. Before Zenith could walk and pull the chair for herself, he stepped forward to do it for her.
"Let me have the honour," he said as he gestured for her to take down the seat.
Ryan didn’t respond. His gaze just shifted to stare at Zenith before he started walking their way.
As his steps grew closer, Zenith felt her heart thumping. For what reason —she didn’t know. But her heart was beating faster and faster, and she simply couldn’t control it.
David noticed him coming their way, and his gaze flicked to look at Zenith once. Before he could ask if she knew him or not, Ryan’s voice came again, repeating what he had said earlier.
"Zenith doesn’t trust anything that’s not practical. So, she would never believe in the love-at-first-sight kind of thing. If you want to bring something impress her, bring something better."
"Sir, I —" David tried to speak; however, right before he could even properly begin, Ryan once again cut him off
"I wasn’t expecting to see you here, Secretary Zane. Was this the plan for your evening for which you took a half-day leave?" Ryan asked, keeping his tone casual.
Zenith finally looked up, and her brows subtly tugged in a frown. "Sir, you gave me the half-day leave. I didn’t ask for it."
Ryan hummed, nodded. "Yes, of course I did. After all, I had to. You missed it yesterday for the work that cropped up at the last minute." His gaze then turned towards David, who was staring at him with a frown of confusion between his brows.
"Won’t you introduce us?" Ryan said again. His words were meant for Zenith, but his gaze was staring at David as though analysing him on certain parameters. "He looked confused regarding me, it seems."
Zenith frowned. But turning to David, she introduced them anyway. "David, this is Mr. Ryan Foster, the CEO of Foster Ventures and my boss. And —" she turned to Ryan and slowly said, her voice coming more like a whisper. "Sir, this is David Chase, my ... date."
Ryan turned to her, his gaze turning cold at the last words she uttered.
David heard her and quickly stood up to extend his hand. "It’s really a pleasure meeting you, Mr. Foster. And to be honest, I am surprised. I never expected to see you in this restaurant, especially the evening tonight."
Ryan never took his hand. He never even turned his way, nor did he acknowledge his words. His gaze simply stayed at Zenith as he asked, "If you don’t mind, Mr. Chase, can I join you guys at your table?"
David was taken aback. His gaze turned to stare at Zenith, only to find her staring at Ryan, unblinkingly.
