Hayes was racking his brain, trying to puzzle things out when he suddenly pulled Teresa back into the conversation. "Didn't you say... we can't just... recognize each other so soon?"
Teresa stopped in her tracks and turned around to explain: "I was afraid to acknowledge each other before because I was worried about your mom... I mean, now she's Manley's mom. I was afraid she might hurt me, that's why I didn't say anything. But these past few days, Manley's mom hasn't come home, and it seems like my mom and Maurice, my dad, might be splitting up. This means our parents might be getting back together. So if you go recognize our mom today, and I go recognize our dad, wouldn't that be killing two birds with one stone?"
Teresa's logic was sound, and Hayes was quickly persuaded.
The kids hurried towards Marguerite's room, only to find it empty. Undeterred, they ran to Frederick's room, but it was also devoid of people.
Teresa glanced at her kids' watch, frowning. "What's going on? It's not even seven yet, where could mom and dad have gone?"
"Should we call them?"
"Good idea!"
With that, Teresa hastily dialed Marguerite's number, but after a long wait, no one answered.
Teresa was on the verge of tears. "Why isn't mom answering? How could she not at such an important time?"
"Maybe she didn't hear it? I'll call dad!"
Hayes then dialed Frederick's number, only to look up disappointedly a half second later. "Dad didn't pick up either... They must be together, right?"
"..."
A minute later, the two little cuties were sitting side by side on the edge of a bed, pouting adorably.
"We can look for grandma, right? Grandma must know where mom and dad are!"
Teresa had a lightbulb moment and immediately grabbed Hayes's hand as they ran downstairs.
Silence!
Teresa looked at Hayes with a tearful face and a voice both urgent and soft, "Little Mute, think of something! How can we find them?"
Hayes's face was serious: "Don't worry, follow me."
The children returned to their bedroom, where Hayes started working on Teresa's laptop, his fingers dancing across the keyboard.
Teresa watched him in awe. Oh, how could she have forgotten such an important fact? Hayes was a hacking prodigy! The day they met, when the principal wanted to call their parents, and they didn't want them to find out, Hayes had blocked the cell phone signals of both their mom and dad.
A hacker could do anything, so surely Hayes could track them too, right?
Teresa watched Hayes with stars in her eyes, her heart bursting with admiration. Her brother was so cool! Just like her dad!
Soon, with a confident "click" of the Enter key, Hayes announced, "Found them."
Teresa tiptoed and peered at the screen, puzzled. "Huh? Stonebridge City Cemetery?"
