Chapter 12 

David’s unease grew palpable as he rose abruptly to leave. 

“David…” Helen clutched his sleevé, her eyes pleading. “Where are you going?” 

“Be good, sweetheart. I need to go home.” David’s gentle tone carried an undercurrent of restrained anger. 

Helen released his sleeve reluctantly, resentment toward Lisa simmering beneath her feigned concern. “Please don’t be harsh with her.” 

“Silly girl, worry about yourself. I’ll be back soon. 

David sped toward the mansion, an inexplicable dread tightening his chest–as if something vital was slipping from his grasp. 

At a red light, he dialed Lisa’s number. A robotic voice answered: 

“The number you have dialed is switched off.

The familiar message now sparked unprecedented panic. He accelerated unconsciously, running red lights and exceeding speed limits unnoticed. 

He just needed to see Lisa.

Approaching the estate, his heartbeat thundered in his ears. 

The moment he pushed the door open, he froze as if struck by lightning, his feet leaden. 

The mansion lay in tomblike silence, the living room resembling a warzone. 

“Darling?” His throat tightened, heart suspended in a web of dread. 

[“My greatest regret is ever loving you!“] 

David swayed violently, vision blurring as an invisible vise crushed his heart. 

Fists clenched, Lisa’s face flashed before him–her smile extinguished since Andorra, her affectionate “darling” silenced, their shredded photographs… 

Her eerie calm whenever he lied about Helen- 

Had she known all along? 

Known about him and Helen- 

The realization drove him to his knees. Shards of glass pierced his palms, blood welling unnoticed as Lisa’s image consumed him. 

“Mr. Green,” his assistant’s hesitant voice crackled through the phone. “Lisa altered her identity records. She’s untraceable. And… she sold Davis Manor House at 10% below market value.”
