“Squeak, squeak!”

One of the fastest giant rats had already sexambled over the wall. It paused for a second on top, beady red eyes- small as pinto beans–locking onto the warm glow of the altar and the main house standing in the middle of the yard.
Then came a second, a third…
“Neeko! Wake up! They’re inside!”
Riley yelled, shoved the bedroom door open, and rushed out into the Hall.
Behind her, the little white cat dissolved into a flash of light. The beast–eared girl still had that drowsy, just–woke- up look in her eyes, but her body was already moving on instinct, following right on Riley’s heels.
“Whoosh–thwack!”
The moment she cleared the front door, Riley had an arrow nocked and loosed. It struck a giant rat that had just hit the ground.
The creature shrieked, smoke curling up from its fur as it thrashed in the snow. But that didn’t slow down the rest of the horde pouring in over the walls.
“Get to the watchtower!”
She shouted back at Neeko, then took the ladder two rungs at a time up to the stone platform of the lookout post.
From up high, she had a clear view of everything.
“Squeak–squeak–squeak!”
Two giant rats were already scaling the side of the main house, claws digging into the wood as they headed for the second–floor vents.
“Trying to tear my place apart?”
Riley’s gaze turned icy. She drew another arrow from her quiver and pulled the bowstring back.
“Twang!”
A full–draw release.
The fine steel arrow, enhanced with its Pierce effect, punched straight through the first rat’s skull. The force pinned the twitching body to the wooden wall.
Then a second arrow. A third…

Boosted by her Agility 17, Riley’s archery was lightning fast. Every shot found its mark, taking down rats that were trying to claw their way into her buildings
But there were just too many of them.
Besides the giant rats, the Ghouls outside were hurling themselves against the gate like madmen.
“Boom! Boom! BOOM!”
The reinforced stone door groaned under the assault.
“Neeko! Hold the ground floor! Don’t let them near the planters!”
Riley spotted several rats that had slipped past, making a beeline for the Advanced Planter tucked in the corner of the yard–where her precious wheat and strawberries were growing.
“GRRAAGHH!”
Neeko let out a ground–shaking roar. Her body swelled in an instant, transforming into that massive, terrifying grizzly bear.
“CRUNCH.”
A giant rat that had just lunged for the wheat was smeared into paste under a single bear paw.
Bear–Neeko planted herself in front of the planter, swatting away any rat that came close. Absolutely ruthless.
Seeing the situation momentarily under control, Riley allowed herself a small breath of relief–but she didn’t let up on her shooting for a second.
“Beep beep beep!”
Just then, her private messenger chimed.
Riley glanced down.
It was PineappleBeer.
“PineappleBeer: Heads up! New monster type tonight–called Corpse–Eater Rat. They can climb! Don’t let them chew on your buildings or your campfire.”
Riley tapped back a voice message, slightly breathless. “Already dealing with them! My yard’s crawling with these things!”
On PineappleBeer’s end, the background was full of clashing metal and snarling–clearly, she was in the thick of a messy fight too. As a full–agility assassin, she probably wasn’t scared of these quick monsters, but they were definitely a pain to handle.
After closing the chat, Riley’s chest tightened suddenly.

PineappleBeer was a combat pro. She’d be fine.
But… what about Tartking?

She’d upgraded to stone walls not long ago too, but her defenses were still pretty basic. If a swarm of wall–climbing rats hit her place…
Riley immediately pulled up TartKing’s contact.
“SpicyBurger: TartKing! Wake up! Get up now! There are rats outside that can climb walls! Guard your house and your campfire!”
The message went out like a stone dropped into deep water.
One minute passed.
Two minutes.
No reply.
Riley’s heart sank, little by little.
Normally, TartKing replied instantly. The fact that she wasn’t answering meant either she was dead asleep… or something had already gone wrong.
But her status icon wasn’t grayed out yet.
Riley’s eyes flicked to her inventory.
There, lying quietly, was that purple Waypoint Teleportation Card.
Her fingers hovered over it.
This was a get–out–of–jail–free card. Priceless.
