The lead monkey-a big, old one with a tuft of white fur on its head-was cradling a jam-covered cracker in both hands. It stuck out its tongue and licked the spread slowly, an almost reverent look on its face.

For a split second, something like pure happiness flashed in its bright red eyes.

The younger monkeys around it watched intently, some swallowing hard. Not a single one dared to move closer or try to snatch it

away.

SpicyBurger and PineappleBeer stayed silent.

“SpicyBurger: What is this, some kind of fan club meetup?”

“TartKing: Okay, look-here’s what went down. When they spotted me, I kinda panicked and just threw the jar of jam I was holding.

“Tartking: Then their boss took a bite and, I swear, it got teary-eyed. After that, they stopped chasing me, we worked things out, and they brought me into this tree hollow.

“Tartking: Earlier, right in front of them, I pulled a few boxes of crackers straight out of my inventory. They were totally stunned by the whole ‘making things appear out of nowhere’ trick. Now they look at me like… I don’t know, like I’m some kind of goddess or something?

“TartKing: Right now I’m basically their long-term snack supplier. They bring me herbs and fruit, and I turn them into sweet treats. The head monkey even gave me some fermented Monkey Wine mash earlier as a thank-you…

“TartKing: Heh, they treat me like their queen now. TartKing finally getting the royal treatment.”

Riley stared at the messages on her screen. For a moment, she was at a loss for words.

Was this what people meant by dumb luck?

Everyone else was fighting to survive in this dungeon, and this girl somehow ended up starting her own cult?

Then again, it made sense when she thought about it.

Red-Gold Ghost-Faced Monkeys were highly intelligent and had a major sweet tooth. In this primal forest where refined sugar didn’t exist, the modern desserts TartKing carried in her inventory-loaded with processed sugars and artificial flavors-might as well have been gifts from heaven to these native monkeys.

Kill her, and they got one meal.

Keep her around, and they got sweets whenever they wanted.

These monkeys had done the math better than most people would.

“SpicyBurger: Alright. As long as you’re safe. But don’t let your guard down. If you run out of sweets, or if they get bored of them, things could turn ugly real fast.”

“TartKing: Don’t worry, boss! The two things I stocked up the most on were potions and snacks! I’ve got enough to keep them happy for a month! Besides, I’m teaching them how to sort herbs now. These monkeys are basically natural-born foragers. I think they really respect me.”

“PineappleBeer: Man. I’m almost jealous. I hate this dungeon. Wish I’d gotten an underground one instead. No gear drops here- just herbs everywhere. Not my thing.”

“PineappleBeer: Oh, hey TartKing picked up some capture spheres recently. You wanna try catching a few monkeys and bringing them back to the snowfields? Maybe you can be queen there, too. Haha.”

“TartKing: Stop messing with me. If I catch anything, it’ll be something actually cute. Hey, SpicyBurger, have you run into any cute magical beasts yet?”

“SpicyBurger: Nope. I’ve got a bestiary here. Flipped through it-nothing really stood out. Maybe the cute ones aren’t in this area yet.”

“SpicyBurger: Now that I think about it, PineappleBeer’s been acting kinda different lately. Why does it feel like he’s always picking on Tart now?”

“PineappleBeer: Am I? Haven’t I always been like this?”

“SpicyBurger: Yes!”

“TartKing: Yes!”

“SpicyBurger: Anyway, since TartKing’s fine, we don’t need to rush. Take your time heading this way. Send a message if anything changes.”

“Got it.”

She closed the chat window, checked her bearing, and continued making her way uphill.

After about 1.2 miles, the dense groves of giant trees began to thin out, replaced by large boulders and cliff faces.
