It wasn’t the proud little white cat anymore. Sylvie stood there in her human form.

She must have heard the noise outside. Or maybe she’d just felt uneasy with Riley gone.

Right now she wore that clean but thin leather outfit, bare feet on the cold floor. Those big eyes under her powderblue hair were fixed on Riley by the door.

The moment she saw Riley walk back safeand even wash her hands so carefullythat tense little face relaxed.

She didn’t say anything. Just leaned against the doorframe and gave Riley this soft, sweet smile.

Riley’s heart did something weird in her chest. Too cute. Way too cute.

Why aren’t you sleeping?

Riley shook her head, walked over quick. There was a softness in her voice she hadn’t even noticed.

Floor’s cold. Get back under the covers.”

The girl seemed to understand. She ducked her head shyly. Then that familiar warm orange glow flickered, and the powderblue haired girl vanished. Little white cat was back.

Meow.

Soft mew. Then she hopped gracefully onto the bed, slipped under the stillwarm covers. eyes showed, watching Riley.

Go to sleep.

Riley rubbed that fluffy head once, then lay down.

Only her big

Warm little creature right next to her. But outside? Ghoul growls cut through the night sometimes. Like a string pulled tight in Riley’s chest.

She didn’t sleep well.

Every few hours, she’d snap awake.

Those things outside the fence. Couldn’t fully let go.

Each time she woke, she’d quietly dress, grab that bloodstained spear, and slip out.

Snowstorm still raged.

Ghouls still circled. Stubborn. Dumb.

Riley’s face stayed cold. Spear through the fence. Accurate.

Another one down.

At this point? These lowtier things were only good for that pathetic 1 EXP.And maybe letting her blow

off some steam.

Wake. Kill. Sleep. Repeat.

Around four in the morning, Riley stabbed one more Ghoul that’d been rattling the fence. Right as it dropped, a system ping hit her mind.

Ding! Congratulations, player. You’ve leveled up!

Current Level: Lv.3 (16/500)

Attribute points awarded: Strength +1, Agility +1, Constitution +1

Warm current rushed through her body. Riley clenched her fists. The spear felt lighter suddenly. Her shoulders, sore from last night, eased up.

She felt that power surging and finally smiled a little. Just stat bumps. But in this hellhole? Every bit counted.

*****

Early morning.

Snowstorm had died down some. Thin sunlight fought through clouds, hit the snowcovered camp.

Riley woke to a server announcement.

Good morning, survivors.

Glad to see you made it through anothereventful night.”

That smug system voice echoed in everyone’s head.

Newbie protection period is over. Daily food and water subsidies are discontinued as of now. If you want to survive, start pulling your own weight.

Riley sat on the bed edge, pulling on boots. Didn’t react much. She had plenty stocked. Those subsidieswere whatever anyway.

But the next part? Made her stop.

Quite a few of you made it, huh? Looks like some smart cookies picked up on last night’s hint.

Smart cookies.Riley snorted. Almost two thousand people died last night. Down to three thousand. That’s quite a few?
