The Heart of Protection necklace around Riley’s neck flashed bright for a split second. The faint glow was instantly smothered and dimmed by thick dark mist.

But that tiny flash was enough. Riley’s hand froze mid-air.

“Desires? Ambition? What do I even want?

“To survive? I’m already living just fine.”

Clear voices echoed inside her head, snapping her dazed mind back to clarity.

A hint of disgust even flickered across her eyes.

Nightshade had worn this exact kind of mask. In the end, he’d turned himself into a disgusting lump of flesh.

Riley slowly pulled her hand back and took one step backward.

“No.”

Her tone was firm and unshakable.

The giant golden eyes of the demon narrowed slightly.

A confused, displeased voice rang inside her mind. “Why? Do you not want to live? Do you not crave control over your own fate?”

“I want to live.” Riley took a deep breath and lifted her head under the crushing pressure.

“But I’d rather stay human.

“Besides, I’m perfectly capable of controlling my own destiny.”

She had rejected him.

This insignificant ant had turned down a god’s gift.

For the first time, emotion flickered across Baal’s empty face-equal parts shock and rage.

“An ant dares to claim it controls its own fate? Foolish.”

His hypnotic tone vanished completely, replaced by a deafening, thunderous roar.

“Then witness true hell before you speak of gifts.”

Baal slowly raised his massive right hand and slammed it down toward the platform where Riley stood.

The single strike shattered the world.

Crack!!

Spiderweb-like cracks spread across the white jade platform beneath Riley’s feet in an instant.

The platform crumbled apart, taking the entire cloud realm down with it.

The crimson sunset in the sky curled, blackened, and peeled away like a charred photograph.

The empty sky morphed into one gigantic bloodshot eye, staring coldly down at her.

The sea of clouds below transformed into a churning pool of blood.

Riley let out a short yelp before falling along with the broken stone fragments.

Weightlessness washed over her. Dizziness blurred her vision.

When she finally steadied herself, she splashed down hard into the bloody pool.

The liquid was shallow.

She was shocked to find herself unharmed, without a single ache on her body.

She slowly stood up, her clothes soaked through with thick blood.

The scenery surrounding her was far more horrifying than any hell she could imagine.

She stood in a blood pool amid charred black soil. The ground was piled high with countless burnt skeletons. Black grease seeped out from between the cracked bones, wispy black smoke curling upward nonstop.

No natural light touched this place.

The only faint glow came from a twisted river in the distance.

The river flowed with molten lava and wailing souls, dotted with drifting green will-o’-the-wisps.

“Where… am I?”

Riley tightened her grip on her dual axes, her heart pounding violently in her chest.

She pulled up her system interface, but the screen was nothing but garbled code. Some invisible force had completely blocked her signal.

Whoosh-

A cold ghostly wind swept past her.

Riley spun around sharply.

A pair of bright red eyes glinted in the darkness behind her.

Then a second pair, a third pair-until hundreds of glowing red dots surrounded her completely.

The creatures stepped out from the shadows.

These were no ordinary beasts.

They were twisted, malformed abominations that defied all logic.

Some were skinned beasts with raw muscle fibers exposed, three human faces plastered across their backs.

Some resembled giant flesh worms, crawling rapidly across the ground with dozens of human arms sprouting from their sides.

Others floated mid-air-nothing but a massive head dragging a long, jagged spine beneath it.

Every single monster was disgustingly grotesque, and there were hundreds of them closing in fast.

“This is my punishment?”

Riley gritted her teeth, cold sweat trickling down her forehead.
