Three yards in front of her, the snow troll stood grinning, baring a mouthful of yellow–brown fangs. It didn’t rush to attack. Instead, like a cat toying with a mouse, it kept waving its heavy bone club, savoring the fear radiating from its prey.
“ROAR!”
Bored with the game, the troll let out a guttural roar, heaved the club high, and brought it swinging down toward the girl with a violent whoosh.
If that blow landed, it wouldn’t just crush the frying pan–it’d turn her into pulp.
Then-
“FWOOSH-!”
A sharp whistle cut through the air.
“THUD!”
Steel sank deep into flesh.
The troll’s arm froze mid–swing. A howl of pain erupted from its throat.
A matte–black steel spear was now buried in its right shoulder–the one holding the club. Only the shaft remained visible, trembling from the impact.
The force knocked the creature back several stumbling steps, and it nearly dropped its
weapon.
The girl heard the noise and spun her head toward the passage entrance.
A figure was sprinting toward her. It was Riley.
Riley was still in her work gear, a pair of hand axes hanging from her belt. In her grip was another steel spear, poised to throw.
Under the grim tunnel lighting, her cool, almost detached expression looked more beautiful to the girl than any angel.
“Get behind me.”
Riley’s voice was flat, leaving no room for argument. Without waiting, she bent down and

“Here goes!”
The second spear shot forward like a black lightning bolt, slicing the air with another sharp
whistle.
“ROAR!”
This time, the troll was ready. Massive as it was, it moved fast–raising its left arm to block.
“Clang!”
The spear struck the bony armor plating its forearm. Sparks sprayed. The weapon glanced off and clattered to the ground.
“Not bad,” Riley muttered, narrowing her eyes. This elite monster’s defense was tougher than she’d anticipated.
With a furious grunt, the troll yanked the first spear from its shoulder. Dark, almost black blood gushed out.
The pain sent it into a rage. Its beady red eyes locked onto Riley, and with another roar, it charged.
“THUD! THUD! THUD!”
Each step made the ground tremble.
Facing the oncoming tank–like beast, Riley didn’t retreat. Instead, she drew her Dual Axes and stepped forward.
“Bring it on!”
They collided.
“CLANG–!!!”
The troll’s bone club met Riley’s crossed axes in a brutal impact.
The shock vibrated up Riley’s arms, leaving them numb. She skidded back several feet, her boots carving twin grooves in the packed earth.
The troll only wobbled slightly, taking half a step back.

“Damn, he’s strong.” Riley gritted her teeth.

This Level 8 elite had to have around 20 Strength, maybe more. Even in a straight contest of force, she was still slightly outmatched.
“ROAR!”
Pressing its advantage, the troll swung the club sideways in a wide, sweeping arc meant to knock her off her feet.
The rush of air stung Riley’s cheeks.
She didn’t dare take the blow head–on. Using her agility, she dropped into a roll, barely evading as the club smashed into the tunnel wall. Rocks and dust exploded outward, leaving a crater in the stone.
Riley’s expression tightened.
She could hurt it—each strike of her axes drew dark blood–but the thing’s hide was thick, and its health pool seemed absurdly deep. After several solid hits, it felt like she’d only scratched the surface.
“This could take forever,” she thought, circling the monster, using her speed to stay mobile, searching for an opening. But her own stamina was dropping fast.
Every block rattled her bones, and she noticed her health ticking down with each clash.
After a few more exchanges, her HP had fallen to 60 out of 80. 1
Then-
“Boss! Catch!”
The girl huddled in the corner shouted.
