She was a little surprised when she received the call from the other matriarch. As it happened, she was in Quinborough visiting Cassian at the time, so the two of them met.
Ruby was the Steele family’s estranged daughter.
The other matriarch had always been a proud and aloof woman, and this was the first time she had ever taken the initiative to ask for a favor.
It made her curious about the girl named Ruby.
Fortunately, the girl did not disappoint.
After graduating, she joined Cassian’s company, and even as an intern, she demonstrated a level of skill and professionalism that surpassed many experts.
She watched Ruby, and gradually, she was drawn to her, coming to appreciate her.
What was even more precious was the girl’s passionate heart for Cassian.
Finally, she and the Steele matriarch came to an agreement and arranged the engagement.
She just never expected…
The old woman let out a long breath, feeling as if a fog had settled over her vision.
It was her own haste and forcefulness that had led to all the irreversible consequences that followed.
If she hadn't forced them together, Cassian might have been attracted to Ruby’s professional competence, and they might have ended up together naturally.
Or perhaps, even if Ruby never won Cassian’s love, she could have remained by his side, continuing her career as a brilliant lawyer.
But… his rebellion had made everything go wrong.
The next time she heard news of the girl, she was in prison.
And shortly after, the old Steele matriarch passed away.
The old woman’s voice was like a wisp of steam rising from tea—calm yet tinged with bitterness, a memory that brought tears to the eyes.
The more Cassian listened, the heavier his heart became.
So, Ruby’s devotion to him had been even deeper than he had imagined.
“I remember Ruby was already pregnant before she went to prison,” the old woman said suddenly.
At the mention of this, Cassian felt as if something was caught in his throat.
“Yes. I had been drugged, and I mistakenly believed she had resorted to underhanded tactics. So when the company ran into trouble the next day and all signs pointed to her, I was so furious that I didn’t think clearly, and I ended up… harming her.”

In the end, all he could offer was a lame denial.
His grandmother clearly knew his character well.

But his grandmother didn’t immediately respond to his request. Instead, she asked him a question. “Cassian, if you were Ruby, would you get back together with you?”
Cassian was momentarily confused by the question, then he began to think.
“Betrayed and sent to prison, while my partner believed the rumors and refused to help me.”
“Imprisoned for a year, losing the career and status I worked so hard for, while my partner was caught up in all sorts of scandals with my adopted sister.”
…
The old woman slowly listed the events between Cassian and Ruby, and Cassian’s expression shifted with each one.
By the time she finished, her throat was dry, and she silently cursed her own grandson. “Cassian, you’re a real piece of work.”
