The old woman didn't believe a word he said. Though Maxwell was her grandson, they weren't close.
His parents were incredibly ambitious, and she had never liked them.
The Spencer matriarch made no effort to hide her dislike.
Marshall had someone find a clean set of clothes for Maxwell to change into.
Maxwell obediently went to change.
The old woman was sharp. She looked at Marshall and asked, "Marshall, what's with that kid? It's so early, and the holidays are almost here. What's he up to?"
Marshall shook his head. "I don't know, Grandma. I just opened the door and saw him kneeling outside."
"Kneeling?" The old woman lowered her gaze. "Nothing has happened to Yves's family recently, has it?"
Marshall hadn't heard anything about Yves's family either.
"Not that I know of. After the company ran into trouble, Yves has been busy getting things back on track. The company's situation has stabilized now."
"Their family hasn't gone bankrupt, so what's that boy doing kneeling outside?" The old woman was puzzled. This was a first for Maxwell.
Marshall shook his head. "I have no idea."
Still, the Spencer matriarch was worried. The fact that Joanna had dismantled the Wilson family overnight had put her on high alert.
She was afraid that the fools around her would destroy the legacy she had built over a lifetime.
She had achieved countless honors in her life, and the walls upstairs were covered with her awards.
Everyone has their biases, and Marshall was her favorite grandson. She intended to leave everything to him.
Only Marshall had ever treated her with genuine affection.
His life had been smooth sailing, and he'd always thought he was invincible.
Now he realized just how mediocre he truly was.
With his parents around, he could get away with anything. But without them, facing a bigger crisis, he'd be useless.
Every stumble on the road of life is a hard-learned lesson.
Ignoring the pain in his knees, Maxwell told the old woman and Marshall everything that had happened the previous night.
Both of them were furious upon hearing the story.
Marshall's anger erupted. "Maxwell, it was Natalie's kindness that saved your life. It's not too late for you to wake up. As for Joanna, we need a careful strategy. Now that you know she's using you, you have to be even more cautious."
Maxwell nodded quickly. "I know, cousin. I was so stupid before, but I'm thinking clearly now. I came to you because I want to build something with you. We're family, we need to stick together. Cousin, please, don't abandon me."
