"Ms. Scott, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" His voice was gentle.

With every sob from Joanna, his heart leaped into his throat.

On New Year's Eve, Joanna and Maxwell Griffith were both rushed to the hospital.

All her previous excitement for the holiday had turned into deep despair.

Maxwell was taken to the emergency room, while she was diagnosed with a broken leg. She would be in a wheelchair for at least three months. Joanna's New Year was turning out to be an absolute disaster.

Even though it was a holiday, the hospital was still crowded, with people rushing in and out, their faces tense.
