Joanna summoned Horace into her office.
Stepping inside, Horace looked at her and asked, "Do you have any arrangements for tonight?"
He had a date planned, but he would cancel it in a heartbeat to be near Joanna.
Her beauty was intoxicating, and he was utterly obsessed with her.
His feelings weren't just a fleeting crush; it was a dark, consuming fixation. He wanted to own her completely, and that burning desire had never once faded.
Joanna gave a curt nod. "Yes. Marshall Spencer sent me an invitation to his family's banquet tonight. He's been holding a grudge for far too long, and I suspect he's planning to humiliate me in public. Before he gets the chance to strike, we are going to serve him a spectacular disaster."
Joanna's eyes burned with ruthless ambition. She cared for nothing now but absolute power and wealth.
Walking this dark, lonely road didn't bother her anymore; the isolation was simply the price of dominance.
Horace offered a sinister smile. "Understood. Don't worry, I won't let you become the punchline tonight. The only one walking away in disgrace will be that trust-fund baby."
Jealousy flared in Horace's eyes. He had a million ways to dismantle a spoiled brat like Marshall.
It infuriated him that men like Marshall were born with the world at their feet, while he had to claw his way out of poverty.
Did a fat bank account give them the right to toy with people's lives?
Joanna caught the raw resentment in his gaze. Horace had a visceral, deep-seated hatred for men born into old money.
They were all human, yet fate had dealt them vastly different hands.
She trusted him entirely to handle Marshall.
"By the way, Horace, take Jenna with you. She's meticulous. Make sure Marshall's reputation is completely destroyed tonight."
She had to be more ruthless than everyone else if she wanted to win.
It was the kind of wealth that commanded fear from the poor and visceral envy from the rich.
With her stunning curves and flawless face, the pale gold fabric made her look like untouchable royalty.
But as Maxwell approached, he realized she didn't jump into his arms with a bright smile and sweet words of love like she used to. A cold wave of disappointment washed over him.
Thinking of all his ignored calls, frustration spiked. He sat beside her and pulled her into a tight embrace. "Why have you been dodging my calls?"
Joanna finally looked up, offering a faint, detached smile. "I've had a brutal day. My mother lost her mind, my oldest brother is dead, and my father suffered a stroke. I simply wasn't in the mood to chat."
It was always the same story. Whenever her world burned to the ground, he was conveniently absent.
Maxwell felt a sharp pang of guilt. He tightened his grip around her waist. "I'm so sorry. I was tied up on a business trip. Have you made arrangements for your parents?"
Joanna's smile didn't reach her eyes. "It's handled. They're of no use to me anymore. I've placed them where they belong. I won't kill them, but they'll spend the rest of their lives suffering. They can just rot away, day by day."
