Seeing his daughter in such pain, Nathan felt a pang of his own.
His voice was hoarse. "Joanna, don't be too upset. Your mother and I are legally married now. Our family of four is finally legitimate. When Wayne comes back, he'll help make things easier for you. You're growing stronger every day. As long as you have money and power, no one will dare call you an illegitimate child."
Joanna knew this, of course.
But she didn't want this relationship exposed so soon.
At the very least, she wanted to wait until she was successful, until her own fame could overshadow these scandals.
Joanna sprang to her feet. Thinking of Wendy's accusations from earlier, she quickly pulled out her phone to check the trending topics.
[Ms. Scott is an ungrateful backstabber]
[Nathan accused of marriage fraud]
All sorts of headlines were plastered across every major news site.
Even a famous online personality was covering the story.
[Wendy's story is so tragic. She lost her company, is deep in debt, and her husband forced her to divorce for the sake of his ungrateful mistress.]
[It gets worse. The daughter she raised turned out to be the mistress's child, while her own biological daughter was driven out. You only see this kind of melodrama among the super-rich.]
As she scrolled down, every comment was calling her an ungrateful backstabber.
"Argh!"
Joanna screamed, smashing her phone on the ground.
Her face was contorted with rage, veins bulging on her forehead. She never imagined she would be ruined at the hands of Mrs. Wilson.
Seeing Mrs. Scott Sr. only irritated Joanna more. What was this old hag doing here?
"Nathan, are you alright?" the old woman asked, helping him to a seat.
Nathan was exasperated. He said, "Mom, I'm fine. Why are you here?"
The old woman pursed her lips, looking displeased. "How could I not come? You and your daughter haven't kept your promise. Your father and I still haven't received this month's hundred thousand."
"And when are you going to let us move in here? The elevator in our current building is always so slow. Getting around is a pain. Living in a mansion is so much more convenient."
As she spoke, the old woman looked at the distraught Joanna.
"Joanna, you promised your grandmother. You can't go back on your word. I need that hundred thousand by tomorrow."
At this, Joanna's anger boiled over. She yelled, "All of you Scotts are bloodsuckers! Absolutely shameless! Only a fool like Wendy would give you money to build a mansion back home and hand over a hundred thousand every month for living expenses. Only an idiot would show any respect to greedy people like you!"
