Jerome got Yvonne, just as he wanted. But Yvonne was too greedy.
“When Zenobia was giving birth, Yvonne knew the child was Jerome’s. She tried to steal the baby to blackmail Zenobia, but she was so stupid that she stole the wrong one and ended up in prison.”
“You all defended Yvonne back then. When she was locked up, did you ever go visit her?”
Natalie’s smile was mocking and cold. It was better not to bring up the past. Thinking about it just made her sick.
It made her furious. Absolutely furious.
Sebastian remained silent. Whenever they talked about the past, it led to endless arguments.
He stepped closer, looking at the child. “He’s adorable. Looks just like Jerome.”
This was Jerome’s son, a son he could never have.
Zenobia’s departure had been so final; it was unlikely she would ever come back.
Sebastian watched as Natalie gazed down at the baby with a gentle smile. She loved children.
But now, all she wanted was to leave him.
He asked tentatively, “Natalie, if you like children so much, we could have one too.”
As soon as he said it, Natalie’s expression changed dramatically. Tears welled up in her eyes. “Sebastian, don’t you ever do that to me. I… I once had a dream that you and I had a child. But when I was four months pregnant, Joanna had me kidnapped. Not only did you not save me, but you pushed me off an abandoned building with your own hands. The baby and I fell into the snow, a bloody, mangled mess.”
“I… you and I can never have a child. And you are never to mention it again.”
Sebastian was stunned. He watched her agitated state and remembered that she’d had a similar reaction before when the topic of children came up. No wonder.
So she had that kind of terrible dream? And in it, he was the one who pushed her.
“Natalie, it was just a dream. You can’t take it seriously. How could I ever do something like that to you?” No matter how vicious he could be, he would never personally push her from a building.
“Thanks,” Natalie said, her spirits low.
She walked inside, holding the baby.
Sebastian watched her slender back, his heart aching.
She had held on to that dream. Dreams were born from the heart.
Sebastian placed her purse on the table. “Dreams come from our deepest thoughts. Don’t dwell on it. Besides, Natalie, you said you love me. Do you really think, knowing my personality, that I would actually do those things to you?”
Natalie didn’t understand. She shook her head. “I don’t know. I’ve never been able to see through you. Sometimes, you seem to feel guilty towards me, but most of the time, you’re just cruel.”
“Maybe after my love was slowly eroded by your heartlessness, my own vision became clouded. I can only remember the pain you caused, not the good.”
It was the same way he only ever had eyes for Joanna, the woman he loved, and never truly saw her at all.
