Jasper had just emerged from the conference room after a grueling evening meeting with the Beckett Group when his phone rang with a call from Cyrus.
"Jasper, I have bad news," Cyrus said, his voice heavy. "The higher-ups signed off on the paperwork. Justin has been released on bail."
"What?" Jasper's heart sank. "How is that possible? What exactly happened?"
"His attorney handed new evidence over to the police, proving he suffers from severe psychosis. Apparently, it runs in the family—both his mother and his uncle have the same diagnosis. To make matters worse, they had a paper trail of detailed medical records and an official psychiatric evaluation report to back it up!"
Furious, Cyrus cursed, "Damn it, that freaking bastard! I never imagined his psychosis would become his lifeline. I've already contacted the forensics team. Justin's currently out on medical furlough, but he can't run—he's still under strict police surveillance.
"I want to see how long he can keep up this psycho act. His pathetic tricks won't hold a candle to a real professional evaluation."
Jasper's eyes darkened, his hands tightening into fists at his sides. "It isn't an act. He really is a psychopath."
"What did you just say? How do you know that?"
"When my grandfather first fell critically ill, he handed two items over to me," Jasper explained. "One was the murder weapon Justin used years ago. The other was his psychiatric evaluation report. Grandpa gave them to me so I could bring Justin down for good and purge him from Beckett Group when the time was right.
"I submitted the murder weapon as evidence. Along with Mr. Gorham's statement, it was enough to get the authorities to detain Justin and expel him from Beckett Group."
Jasper pressed his fingers against his throbbing temples, his breath hitching. "The only reason I held onto his psych evaluation report was that I was terrified he'd use it as a loophole to get out on bail. I didn't expect—"
Cyrus let out a helpless sigh. "Jasper, I know you were trying to be thorough, and I'm not blaming you. But you should have told me about the report immediately. If you had, I could have anticipated this and taken preventive measures. Now, we've been forced onto the defensive."
Jasper lowered his head. "I'm sorry. I overengineered the plan and was far too cautious."
"Look, he murdered Sheryl. That remains an irrefutable fact. With all the charges stacked against him, there's no way he walks away a free man.
"But with this new evidence, combined with the powerhouse legal team he's assembled, he might just pull off a miracle—like getting a suspended death sentence, or having it commuted to life in prison. I need to see him executed, Jasper. Otherwise, I'll never be able to move past this."
"Now that things have taken a turn for the worse, you need to stay in Solana City to hold down the fort, Chief Taylor. I'll head to Mosgravia alone to dig into the Kings' Club."
"On your own? Absolutely not!" Cyrus protested without hesitation.
"I've looked into the Kings' Club membership criteria. Right now, my current position and assets fit the profile perfectly. I should be able to infiltrate them once my application clears.
