I wanted to be on top of my class to meet the imperial family, especially the Dragon Queen. I wanted to tell her about the packs who had wronged the omegas even if it meant implicating myself for lying about my identity.
I didn’t have to do that anymore.
When Aidan told me he would hunt every alpha involved in the illegal auction, I believed him. Tonight, I learned to believe. In him. In packs. In families.
In miracles.
I remembered every specific day that the imperial family had lanterns exclusively for the dragon princess that were visible in all the realms as the dragons descended and the wolves howled, the day where the sound of Creed’s violin would echo for everyone to hear, the day when I often get sick, when my wolf would feel restless the whole time without knowing that it was my body’s way of responding to their call.
They had been calling me all along.
‘Come home.’
I’d been dreaming about two people telling me those two words. After hearing Creed and Elianna’s voices, I now knew it was theirs.
They had been trying all this time to reach out to me. Had I known sooner, I would have come home with the man who raised me. I could have had him checked by their expert healers. He could have been alive by now. I was sure he would be among the people who would be cheering for me.
I looked around as the crowd gave us a round of applause while we were inside the very place that I never thought I would get to step into.
Beside Aidan stood Laurent, the latter bowed his head. Sebastian was nowhere to be seen. As if reading my mind, Aidan mouthed, “He’ll be here tomorrow, don’t worry.”
He had always known what I needed before I even asked.
And then there was Zane Black who looked like the younger version of our father. He pressed a soft kiss on my forehead.
“Leave all your worries to me, Mari. Your big brother got your back. I didn’t get to save you before, but I will now. I will take charge from here. You can now rest.”
At last.
It was my dream. To sleep without worrying about tomorrow for once. And I felt it, the way the weight on my shoulders were lifted all at once, helping me breathe easily this time.
“Tell me you believe me please. I will make things right, I promise.”

Zane looked at me like he needed me to believe him. I heard that he had been carrying the guilt in his chest for a long time about his sister.
“I don’t remember you. I don’t share the same memories as you all do but my wolf and my heart both believe in you.”
Zane’s eyes gleamed with unshed tears. “That’s more than enough, Mari. Thank you.”
Our mother and father softly kissed me on each of my cheek as they proudly raised my hands. I was only wearing jeans, a plain shirt, and dirty boots but they didn’t mind. They looked at me with pride, with wonder. and with so much affection, the same emotions that I saw from the man who adopted me.
Creed’s voice echoed in the hall as he announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, we proudly present to you our daughter, Maria Regina Black!”
(Zane)
“Who said the party is over? It hasn’t even started yet. Please return to your seats, gentlemen,” I announced as I marched towards the imperial table. “The gifts are yet to be handed out. You are going to love them, I assure you. More food and drinks will also be delivered shortly. This is a happy night for our family. Tonight, we will celebrate!”
The ‘gifts’ were more than enough to make them stay to feed their curiosity. The guests sank back in their seats comfortably. As the orchestra played louder than ever, the guards locked the doors, including the possible exits.
I knew they had wanted to leave as soon as my parents left with my sister had it not been for Aidan who I asked to keep them company until I returned. I didn’t expect that he would drag his comrade into this though. Then again, I shouldn’t have expected too much from the man who only knew how to keep people shut up with gore and violence.
We may be the best of friends, but we were polar opposites. While Aidan loved to rip his enemies apart and ended them swiftly because he couldn’t be bothered to wait, I was different.
I dined with my enemies. I chat with them.
Tonight, I even gave them food and drinks.
It was actually a smart move because had Aidan been the one up there on the stage, half of the guests would have destroyed the doors just so they could evacuate in a hurry. There was no official in all the realms who hadn’t heard of his reputation.
When I returned, the highly distinguished Bradley Laurent was playing the piano for the guests, easing the guests’ boredom, sucking them in with his natural aura to captivate people. No wonder he was sought after by many realms. He could silence the guests no matter their ages and charmed even the men.
Aidan must have informed him of what was to come, and he could have made his escape to relax in his mansion after his performance but to my surprise, he stayed and stood in a corner.
Without the spotlights directed at him, Laurent looked like a predator about to devour his prey His charm on the stage was gone. Instead, there was a murderous look in his eyes, particularly in his beast, that mirrored mine. I could understand why Aidan was buzzing with the intent to kill, but Laurent? No.

Did one of the guests piss him off? That rarely happened. Because both Laurent and his dragon often looked at people and things with disinterest as if the entire world bored them.
I shrugged. Not my business anymore.
