“I don’t think you all can come in!”

“Oh please, we already got permission from H.O.W.L management and…” Claudia was still arguing when Daylight Newscaster Mirena arrived with her own team. They approached the entrance, and Mirena didn’t even need to flash her badge before the guard let her through.

Not because she was Sera’s sister–in–law, but because Daylight News had earned its place as the top channel in both the werewolf territory and the human region.

Claudia Feed watched this, ready to throw a dramatic fit, but Mr. Sonny suddenly appeared from the corridor where I stood, and with one nod, he ordered the guard to let them in too.

I watched them walk further inside, Dove among the reporters trailing behind. She paused, looked up at where I stood, and waved, but I was too tired to wave back. I only watched her enter the elevator and sighed.

A few minutes later, the elevator chimed open again and Mirena stepped out. I walked right into her arms when she opened them.

“What’s going on? I heard Sera got a call from him.”

I swallowed hard.

Yes. About five hours ago, he called. Feroz Gingers–his name. And now everything Marlik warned me about was beginning to make sense. This case wasn’t normal. Perhaps it’s best to run away from it.

“The meeting is starting soon, in the main hall,” I said. She nodded, studying my face.

“You okay?”

“Yeah. Just tired. Once we’re done with the briefing, we’ll close for the day.”

“Good. You need the rest.”

“Snow!” My name echoed behind me and I turned to see Quince. “Come on, the meeting’s starting.”

I exchanged a look with Mirena, and together we headed for the door only for the elevator to chime open again. Claudia Feed and her team stepped out.

Mirena paused, staring down at Claudia.

“Daylight News is covering this first. You can air the second release after mine.”

But Claudia didn’t back down. She smirked and held up a document signed by Mr. Sonny himself.

“I’m sorry, Mirey, but Sweet Gossip Feed is covering this story.” She turned to her crew with a bright smile. “Wait here.”

She breezed past us toward the hall. I glanced at Mirena, who clenched her jaw. Before I could say anything, Eshan appeared, looking so distracted he nearly passed us without seeing us. Then he paused.

“Hey.” He kissed Mirena’s forehead, then turned to me. “Come on, we’ve got work.”

“Eshan?” Mirena stopped him. “Daylight needs this story too.”

He frowned.

“You own it in the first place.”

“Well, Deputy Director Sonny signed Claudia’s papers.”

“Get in. Father–in–law will sign yours too,” he murmured, holding the door open.

Everyone was already seated for the briefing. Mr. Sonny nodded politely in Mirena’s direction, while Claudia shot her a glare. Their rivalry was so sharp I wondered how they both survived the industry.

“Alright, let’s begin,” Mr. Sonny said. Wrinks stepped forward to display the image of the young man. Hal Gingers. The one who died last night.

“Hal Gingers,” she said. “Thirty–three years old. Owner of a gambling casino and founder of A- Hotel.” A video appeared on the screen. “Last night, he walked up to H.O.W.L headquarters on his own legs, and collapsed at the entrance. He bled out and died.”

The door opened quietly then, and the forensic team entered. Everyone turned. They looked exhausted, clearly having spent hours trying to determine why a healthy man would simply collapse and die.

Wrinks waited for them to settle, then continued.

“We’ve analyzed Hal’s fingerprints and confirmed his identity. He’s a Ginger, a werewolf from Alpha Pack. His elder brother is Feroz Ginger, the Alpha of Alpha Pack, the same man who

called earlier demanding to know what killed him. Feroz is also the prime suspect in Marlik Rogue’s case.”

Mirena scribbled notes; Claudia imitated her with forced seriousness. After Wrinks finished, she nodded to Sera, who stepped forward. Marcus adjusted the screen to show autopsy images.

“Following the wishes of his brother, we examined Hal’s corpse thoroughly,” Sera said. “Last night he appeared normal. He simply fell to his knees and collapsed. After the autopsy, we found this.”

Silence washed across the room. Sera pointed at a small mark on Hal’s neck.

“A dart puncture,” she said quietly. “It appears to be the possible cause of death, something a professional assassin might use. But after further analysis, we determined it isn’t homicide. Hal Gingers died of a heart attack. That is the official result.”

She presented the evidence, and Mr. Sonny added calmly,

“Which means this was not murder. Return the body to Alpha Pack and redirect our focus to Marlik Rogue’s case. Where were we on that?”

I blinked as Mr. Gerald stepped forward.

“We’re bringing Rasha in tomorrow. Snow will conduct the interrogation.”

Mr. Sonny nodded. I exhaled, long and heavy.

The meeting wrapped up and the day finally ended. Exhaustion pulled at every part of me. Hal Gingers‘ case had been closed just like that.

I turned away, remembering I had requested to meet Cupid tonight.

My back ached, and honestly, there was no one else I wanted to end my night with but him.
