Snowflakes

“Stop here,” I said softly to the man behind the wheel, one of Cupid’s men from the strippers‘ club who’d offered me a ride. He obeyed immediately.
bowed in thanks and got out, a block away from H.O.W.L, letting out a slow sigh. Clutching my bag, already late, I hurried across the street and stepped into the sacred building of H.O.W.L.
I slipped into the elevator and pressed for the profiling floor, preparing myself mentally. When the doors chimed open, I stepped out, letting the coldness in the air and the soft voices of my colleagues settle over me like a weight.
I reached the glass doors and froze. Mr. Gerald was already waiting. My throat tightened. I opened the door and walked in. He shot to his feet with his hands on his hips, glaring at me with a wide, mocking smile.
“Wow. The head of department is here. Snowflakes Frost. The woman calling the shots,” he said sarcastically, clapping slowly. “Maybe in my second life I should come back as a Frost. How about that?”
He didn’t wait for my reply, apology, or explanation. He simply glared, brushed past me, and slammed the door behind him.
I exhaled softly, but before I could process the sting of his words, Quince appeared at my side, extending a file.
“Rasha. You left before I could give this to you last night. It contains everything you need on her,” he said. I nodded and took it.
If I truly wanted to get into Rasha’s mind, and push her into confession, I needed everything.
“I’ll study it,” I murmured, moving toward my desk. But before I could sit, footsteps approached.
I turned to see Dove in the doorway, hands clasped behind her back, face stern. Too stern. I stared for a moment, then sighed and walked toward her. She nodded at me, silently demanding an explanation.
“Let’s talk later. I have to…”
“Start talking,” she hissed, “or I’ll call Eshan. No, Kashi. And I’ll tell him you lied about coming to my place last night. You know how soft your brother Kashi is for you. I wonder what he’d think about his precious sister if…”
“Will you lower your voice!” I cut her off, grabbing her wrist and pulling her into a quiet corner. Frustration bit at my lip. “Dove, you can’t tell anyone. Not yet.”
She waited, eyes locked onto mine, unblinking.
“Alright. Let’s hear it,” she said. I parted my lips, but she grabbed my wrist again, this time with pleading eyes. “Please don’t tell me it’s Ares you’re going back to.”
At that name, disgust twisted my stomach. I yanked my wrist out of her hold.
“Are you crazy? Why would I go back to Ares?”
“Well, you’re being secretive! I don’t know who you went to. I don’t know why you’re hiding and…”
“I can’t tell you yet, Dove. All I can say is that I am… so, so safe.”

“A… a man?”
I met her eyes, then looked away, answering with silence.
“Who is he? You have… wait. Snow. You’ve been sleeping with this man?”
“So hard I can barely stand,” I murmured, sighing and tucking my hair behind my ear. Dove stared at me, stunned.
“We’re focusing on this case,” I continued. “After it’s done… we’ll go public. And I swear to you, I won’t disappoint you.”
She looked like she wanted to argue, but after searching my expression, she saw my certainty and sighed.
“Fine. But I’ll be petty. I lied to your brothers to save your ass last night. Now I want payback.”
“You’re joking. They don’t even believe your explanation. I still got some words to tell my dad when he returned from his trip.”
“Well, Payback or I tell them. I want to be there when you interview Rasha. She’s coming in…”
She didn’t finish. The sound of cameras clicking and sudden commotion echoed from the lower floor. Dove and I rushed to the balcony and looked down. A car had pulled up, reporters swarming around it, flashing cameras frantically for an exclusive shot.
“It’s Rasha,” Dove said, turning to me. “I won’t expose your secret. But you’ll give me exclusive view of the interview.”
“That is a threat, Dove Mane.”
“I’m sorry if it sounded that way. Yes or no?”
My shoulders sagged. I still wasn’t ready to tell my human family. Not yet.
I bit my lip, swallowing the knot in my throat. Then I looked back at the crowd, and finally back at Dove, who grinned before pulling me into a hug.
“I love you,” she said.
I pushed her off with a smile and a glare.
“Liar.”
Her laugh faded, replaced with serious eyes pinning me in place.
“Don’t get hurt, Snowflakes Frost. You’ve endured enough. I’ll cry my eyes out if you go through another heartbreak.”
I sighed and nodded.
“I won’t get hurt.”
“Is he… handsome?” she asked, curiosity sparking.
I almost smirked. What would she do if I told her it was the dangerously beautiful, maddeningly intense Cupid Godlike?
My gaze drifted back to the floor below, just in time to see her. Rasha. Ex–pornstar turned Marlik’s woman. She stepped in alone, heading straight toward the elevator.
“She really does have the killer body,” Dove muttered. “Rumor says she’s Feroz’s whore.”

“We’ll know whether it’s truth or rumor after the interrogation,” I murmured.
“Snow.”
Mr. Gerald’s voice came from behind.
I turned, exhaling slowly.
It was starting.
Dove and I rushed forward.
