I prepared for the big day the moment the sun came up. I got up from bed, reached for my cellphone, and texted Cupid. I’ve tried calling him ever since I got discharged from the hospital, but his line hasn’t gone through once.

‘Big day, Cupid. Your brother is coming out from the prison yard to open space. Fresh air and maybe release too. Call me when you get this.‘

I hit send and walked out of my bedroom. On my way to the kitchen, I paused at Eshan’s door to knock and ask if he wanted breakfast before leaving for court since he’d.be prosecuting today.

No answer at first. Just a soft moan that made me freeze. Is Pinky here?

“Come in,” a voice called. Kashi’s voice.

I stepped back and blinked at the door, realizing I had knocked on the wrong one. Eshan’s and Kashi’s doors look identical. With a sigh, I opened it anyway and stood in the doorway.

Kashi lay in bed. Beside him was Mirena, her bare shoulder peeking from beneath the coverlet, clearly naked and utterly beautiful.

“Good morning. I didn’t know Mirey is here.”

“I arrived late last night,” she said, getting off the bed fully naked, so casual in her beauty it almost hurt. She walked to the dresser she’d claimed for her frequent visits, rubbing morning cream onto her face. “I can’t go one week without my boyfriend’s dick.”

“Mirey…” Kashi protested under his breath, but she and I only exchanged knowing grins.

“Will you be having some tea?” I asked. She nodded before turning fully toward me, concern on her pretty face.

“You okay though?”

“Very much.” My eyes flicked over her breasts before moving back up. She truly was stunning. Kashi was a lucky man and she was lucky too. “I’ll prepare some tea. Then I’m heading to

court.”

“Same here. Daylight News is covering the case today. We need to get the first shot of Marlik Rogue. His case is huge, and I want to see how it ends.”

She paused, then I added, “Oh, that reminds me. Which channel aired Rasha’s death?”

“I thought it was your best friend, Dove?” She replied.

“She wouldn’t do that. I don’t think Sweet Gossip Feed covered it.”

“I think it was another channel,” Kashi said from the bed. “My assistant was watching it, and it wasn’t Sweet Gossip Feed.”

That made me sigh. So who aired that news and why without proper permission?

I stepped out gently and finally went to Eshan’s real door. I knocked. It opened after a minute, and he appeared already fully dressed.

“Yes?”

“Good morning, Eshan. Will you be having tea?” I asked, and he looked at me before leaning down to kiss my cheek.

“Tea will be great, but the session today might not be. I don’t know why something feels off.”

I sighed, because that same strange heaviness had been on me since dawn. Like something wasn’t going to go as planned.

Outside the courthouse, on this bright morning, reporters crowded every space. Cameras ready, mics raised, all waiting.

When Eshan arrived, they rushed forward, shouting, but he ignored them. They kept a respectful distance since they all knew Eshan never spoke unnecessarily, and that he could be a very crazy man when provoked. He opened the door for me and Mirena, who came with us, and together we entered.

Eshan left for the prosecution chambers while Mirena branched off to meet her team. I went to find mine.

“Where has he reached?” That was the first question Wrinks threw the moment I entered the waiting room.

“He’s unreachable,” Quince said, and Mr. Gerald immediately snapped.

“The court is about to start. Call Sir Jack, the chief warden.”

“He’s not picking up either.”

I paused, watching the chaos unfold, not understanding any of it.

Footsteps echoed outside and then the door opened.

“The session is starting,” the clerk announced.

My stomach dropped. The session was starting, yet Marlik was not here. Oh Moon goddess. Was this the bad omen I’d been feeling?

“Let’s go,” Mr. Gerald ordered, and everyone moved out. I lingered a moment before hurrying after them, entering the hallway and finally the great courtroom.

It was true the session had begun. My heart panicked instantly, especially when Judge Neils White stepped in. Cameras flashed. Silence fell.

Neils White looked tall and almost innocent, his glasses giving him a gentle look. But I knew better. He was wicked beneath that softness.

We waited. Eshan took his place as prosecutor. Marlik was only supposed to be here for questioning, no lawyer needed, since all the evidence favored him. He just had to show up and repeat what he told us in our interview.

But he wasn’t here.

I pulled out my cellphone and called him, heart leaping but it didn’t go through. I exhaled shakily. What would happen now? The case was years long and only reopened because of the sudden buzz. If Marlik didn’t show up…

“Where is the suspect?” Judge Neils White asked coldly, snapping me back. Fifteen minutes had passed. Cameras zoomed in.

“Well,” Neils continued, “since he isn’t here, the session and case should be closed. That is my judgment.”

I shot to my feet in disbelief. What? Just like that?

“That’s unfair!” I burst out. He paused mid–strike of the gavel, his eyes narrowing, and cameras swung toward me. Too late to take it back.

“You can’t close a case like that. You have no idea what we, the H.O.W.L staff, went through to get here today.”

He slammed the gavel. Final.

A cold chill ran through me. I turned to Eshan. He looked just as stunned. Then his jaw hardened and he stormed out.

I knew exactly where he was going. I ran after him.

In the lonely hallway, I found him slamming Neils White against the wall.

“Eshan!” I rushed forward, pulling him back. Neils chuckled triumphantly, straightening his robe and wig.

“You crazy man. Open that case right this minute!” Eshan growled.

Neils‘ smirk faded. His eyes went ice–cold, chilling me where I stood.

“You should be thanking me,” Neils hissed. “You think the law can catch a man like Feroz? You saw how Rasha died. You want your sister to die like that? Or wait… I know your girlfriend.”

“Shut the fuck up,” Eshan warned, voice low, but Neils kept stabbing the wound.

“Very beautiful. An actress. She’s every man’s dream. Even mine,” Neils sneered. “I wouldn’t mind fucking her again and again…”

The words died instantly when Eshan slammed him against the wall..

“Men like Feroz will target beauty like that,” Neils hissed, breath shaky now. “And he will make you pay for your sins through her. Accept that you sent Marlik Rogue to an unjust prison and learn to live with it.”

He tore himself out of Eshan’s grip and exhaled.

“You prosecuted him. You’re the one who declared him a criminal. I’m only doing my job based on the evidence placed before me. Bye.”
