I walked out of the visiting room and stepped into the open. The sky had darkened even more. The night–shift security guards were taking over their posts now.
I turned toward the garage where Cupid was supposed to park, but there was nothing there. No car, no him. And I hated to believe he had left me behind. Slowly, I made my way out of the prison walls, the wind cold and sharp, the energy in the air making the chill pierce deeper.
I reached the open stretch outside the prison and froze.
Cupid stood there, leaning against his car, arms folded over his chest, silent and waiting.
Quietly, I approached him, my heartbeat thudding harder with every step. I stopped just a step away from him. His eyes held mine. intense, unyielding, devoid of anything warm. If I wasn’t mistaken, I believed he was mad at me.
“You walked here?” he asked, his tone almost sarcastically cruel.

lower lip and shook my head.
For a long moment, he just stared at me, as if I had completely lost my mind. Then his gaze swept the surroundings, the darkness, the empty expanse, the isolation.
There was nothing on this whole block except the massive prison. The busy road was far away. There was no taxi anyone could possibly catch here.
“You rode alone, at night, to come here? In a taxi? Really?” he asked, still unable to believe it–1 and the look in his eyes sent a chill right down my spine.
“Cupid…”
“Get in the car,” he cut me off, dismissive and cold.
My heart sank. I was right. He was mad.
Lowering my gaze, I walked to the passenger side, opened the door, and settled in quietly. He got in too after a moment, slid behind the wheel, and pulled out without a single word.
The ride away from the prison and toward the busy road was suffocatingly silent. I kept

stealing glances at him. He was dressed more casually tonight. Sneakers. His hair, usually neatly combed back, now fell over his forehead in full bangs.
He looked effortlessly handsome but dangerously so. His silence terrified me. I bit my lower lip, trying to understand why he was so mad. Because I came alone? Or…
Wait. His bullet wound.
“Tell me your address,” he said, breaking the heavy silence. His voice still carried no warmth.
“I… I want to spend the night with you,” I murmured softly.
He didn’t budge. He asked again, flatly,
“Your address.”
My heart sank even deeper. I swallowed hard and turned fully toward him. His eyes remained on the road. The car slowed to a stop at a red traffic light, but still, Cupid didn’t spare me a single glance.
Quietly, I texted Dove, told her that my brothers believed I was with her then switched off my phone. I looked back at him.
“I’m staying with you tonight, Cupid.”
He heard. He simply didn’t care. He pulled out his phone, dialed Desmond, and I stared, confused, until he spoke into the receiver.
“Give me the address of the Frost ho…”
I snatched the phone from him and ended the call, frustration spilling out of me.
“Cupid.”
“The phone,” he murmured, turning to me with a dead, frightening stare. “Now.”
“What is wrong with you? Did I do something wrong?” I asked, stunned, unable to understand his anger. “Cupid…”
My words died when he looked away, jaw clenched hard, as if he was fighting not to snap. After a long, dreadful pause, he turned back to me and asked, calm but razor–sharp.
“Why did you follow them to Feroz’s warehouse?”
My heart dropped to my stomach. I swallowed.

“Cupid…”

“You’re a profiler. You could’ve told your boss, anyone, that you weren’t going into Feroz’s zone. Why didn’t you tell them?”
That was when reality hit. I never truly understood how furious this man could be until now. He looked me dead in the eyes, and my breath stuttered. All I felt was fear. Deep, primal fear.
“Because they’ll say I’m a Frost. A nepo kid,” I whispered, trembling.
He stared at me like I had grown another head.
“You went… to the lair of a drug lord… because you didn’t want people talking about you?”
“Cupid, calm down…”
“You think I care about that?” His voice rose, not loud, but terrifying. “Were you supposed to care about that? When your life was at stake? You saw what they did to Rasha. That woman died in front of you. And you still agreed to go to his warehouse? Do you have nine lives? Or is there some kind of superpower beneath that pretty face that I don’t know about? Because why? Why would you agree to such a suicide mission? Why?!”
My lower lip trembled. I sniffled, trying to hold myself together. He was so angry.
“I’m… I’m sorry,” I whispered. I couldn’t think of anything else to say.
He stared at me for another second then nodded once, slow and pained.
“Sorry.” His voice cracked with exhausted fury. “You have no idea what you did to me, Snow. Fear. That rotten feeling I have trained myself out of… you brought it back. All I could think of while I was racing to find you was, what if I’m late? Just like I was with my mother. What if you died? Worst case scenario… What if you were raped?”
The rawness in his voice, the pain, the sheer terror etched into him pulled tears straight out of my eyes. I felt it all. Deep in my bones.
Why were we bonded like this? Why did his pain feel like my own?
“Cupid…” I whispered.
“I’ll forgive everything,” he said quietly. “Every mistake. But not when you put yourself in danger. The next time you do something crazy… I won’t talk to you. Ever.”
He said it like a vow. A promise. A threat.
