I never expected a cheering welcome when I arrived at MoonCrest pack. In truth, I hadn’t expected any attention at all.
But the moment I stepped into the outdoor sitting room, the air shifted.
They were all there, seated in a loose semicircle beneath the winter–bare trees, as though they’d been waiting for me to walk through the gate.
I haven’t seen Viviana back at the Frost home, yet there she sat beside Dante, poised, serene, wearing that practiced mask of innocence no one would ever believe capable of the havoc she’d wrought. Her eyes flicked to me once, cool and unreadable.
Father wasn’t present yet. I bowed in greeting to Mother, who stared at me with blank, distant eyes before shaking her head slowly, as though she couldn’t bear the sight.
“Just wait until your father comes,” she said quietly.
I gave no reply. Instead, I turned and walked wordlessly down the familiar hallway, footsteps muffled on the thick rugs.
I slowed when I reached the small alcove that led to Grandmother’s bedroom. Even though she wasn’t here, lying in the sacred coma bed in the pack infirmary, a place too holy for a wolfless creature like me to enter, I could still feel her.
That saintly aura hung in the air. Heavy, soft, divine. It wrapped around me like a memory of grace I’d never quite earned.
“What are you doing here?”
Father’s voice crashed down the hall like thunder. I went rigid. Slowly, I turned to face him.
He looked murderous.
“Dad…”
“What were you thinking before that story aired across every channel?” he snarled, stepping closer. “What?!”
My heart stuttered beneath the weight of his glare.
Our interactions had always been few, always ending in bitterness or confusion, but the hatred burning in his eyes now felt like something I might never recover from.

He advanced until he was inches away. I held my ground, even as fear coiled tight in my stomach.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done to me today?” His voice cracked with fury. “Do you have any idea the names they’re calling me now? Huh?!”
He lunged forward and seized my arm in a bruising grip. Ice flooded my veins. Mother and my siblings rushed into the hall. Nero, Dante, Viviana, but none of them moved to intervene. His fingers tightened, nails biting into flesh.
“An alpha who can’t even recognize his own daughter. An alpha whose daughter is insane. An alpha who can’t control this, can’t control that. Daughter, daughter, daughter!”
He released me with a rough shove. I stumbled back, spine slamming against the wall.
“For the Moon Goddess’s sake, are you the only child I ever fathered? Do you want to end me before my time?”
I stared at him in stunned silence. No one spoke. Viviana stood off to the side, eyes soft and sorrowful for anyone who didn’t know her, but I saw the gleam of satisfaction she couldn’t quite hide.
Father looked at me with pure disdain, jaw grinding as he delivered the final blow.
“I am disowning you. Thank the Moon Goddess you carry the Frost name, because I will erase you from everything I stand for. If you ever dare step foot on my territory again, I will kill you myself.”
He turned and strode away, fury rolling off him in waves. My brothers followed without a word. Mother lingered only long enough to give me one last quiet, unreadable look before she, too, walked away.
I was left alone in the hallway with Viviana.
She watched me for a long, deliberate moment. Then she grinned wide, victorious, unrestrained.
She turned to leave.
“I will sue you,” I said quietly, the words slipping out before I could stop them. “For leaking my medical records without consent.”
She slowed, then pivoted, expression shifting to perfect innocence.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. It wasn’t my fault your biological family despises
you. Now you’re trying to pin your own carelessness on me?” Her voice dripped with mock pity. “Is it my fault you’re crazy? Or that you were… raped?”

“What?” she continued, stepping closer. “You’ve lost your job. Your reputation. The Frost name. Your bloodline. Everything Everyone. If I were you, I’d tie the noose. You’re such a disgrace.”
Silence swallowed the hallway. She smiled one last time, triumphant, and walked away, heels clicking like final nails in a coffin.
I stood there for a long time, letting her words sink in. My job. My image. The Frost name. Now this.
I sighed deeply, heavy with exhaustion, and made my way outside to the waiting car. I slid into the backseat, and the driver pulled away, tires whispering over fresh snow.
She was right.
I was losing everything.
The media wouldn’t stop until I gave them something, until I did something.
“Stop.”
The word slipped from my lips, soft but certain. The car rolled to a halt.
My eyes fixed on the alley ahead.
That same alley.
The one that had started it all.
Goosebumps erupted across my arms. I swallowed hard, throat tight.
Come to think of it, I had never truly considered reopening that case. Never let myself think
about it.
I looked away, trying to steady my breathing, when my gaze fell on the Mr. Lins file on the
seat.
Slowly, I lifted it, fingers trembling.
