“Oh, sir had a session in court today. I’m afraid he won’t be back until late,” one of the prosecutors from my brother’s department, his department, said, and I nodded.
“Will you wait for him?”
“Uh… probably not. I’ll call him instead. Thank you.”
I left him and moved toward the staircases instead of the elevator, but on the first step I had to pause, letting the emotions flow freely at last. The murder of Mr Hanba… the killer is a rogue? Found with his throat split open?
My heart throbbed painfully.
I reached for my bag, pulled out my cellphone, and keyed in his name. Cupid Godlike. Information flooded the screen immediately.
Thirty–one. Son of Alpha Ruis Godlike.
Three sisters. One brother, Yenda and then I froze.
Cupid Godlike is not a true–blooded Godlike. He was adopted at thirteen. Everything before his adoption was unavailable, erased, hidden, or simply nonexistent. I checked for criminal records, but nothing appeared. Clean. Absolutely clean. He supposedly manages his father’s businesses. Nothing more.
My shoulders sagged as I sank onto the steps, staring into the dim stairwell. No one used the stairs. I was alone, alone and overwhelmingly confused.
Yet the puzzle wasn’t so difficult to piece together. The man I met that night, the one who kissed me to hide had shifted before me. His wolf had a single stripe on its fur.
A single stripe.
I shot to my feet.
Any werewolf with a stripe on their fur is rogue. No pack. No home. No alpha.
My knees weakened again and I dropped back down onto the steps. Everything was becoming clearer, too clear.
Cupid Godlike is a rogue. He was the one chased from Mr Hanba’s vacation house that night. But the question weighing on my chest like a stone was simple.

Is he the one who slit Mr Hanba’s throat?
Nothing made sense. No logic. No clarity.
Swallowing hard, I reached for my bag again and pulled out the business card Desmond had given me. I bit my lower lip as I scanned the number.
Since Cupid and I were assigned to coordinate the charity event, I had no choice but to contact him. We needed schedules, meetings, documents… all the formalities.
I dialed Desmond’s number. He answered after a short ring.
For a moment, my voice was lost. My mind went blank. Did Desmond know the truth about his boss?
“Mr Desmond,” I began politely, steadying my breath. “This is Snow, from F.A.A.R. I’d like to arrange a meeting with Mr Cupid Godlike, perhaps dinner tonight. We need to discuss the schedule for the holiday charity event, review documents, and sign everything required for the collaboration between werewolves and humans.”
Silence.
Heavy, absolute silence.
I couldn’t even hear background noise on his end. At last, he spoke.
“I will let Boss know about it.” And he disconnected.
I stared at my phone, surprised. He’d sounded rigid. Too rigid.
Well… he had been rigid this morning, too.
I slipped my cellphone and the card back into my bag and began descending the stairs. Exhaustion crawled through me. I hadn’t even truly started the job, yet it already felt draining.
It was 5 p.m., and the offices had closed. I reached the ground floor and headed toward the entrance when my name came from behind.
I turned to see Quince stepping out of the elevator, bag slung over his shoulder, curly hair bouncing as he approached.
“Going home?” he asked with an easy smile.
“Yes.”
“You came with your car?” he continued as we walked toward the exit.

I shook my head.
“No.”
“Really? Then you won’t mind if I drive you home, will you?”
He was eager. I could feel it radiating off him. My intuition whispered the same. I smiled, about to answer, when a voice cut through the space ahead of us.
“No.”
We both turned.
Eshan Frost stood there.
The best prosecutor yet. The undefeated one. The man the world still wondered who could ever break his winning streak. He looked freshly returned from court, still in full attire, and when our eyes met, his gaze spoke volumes.
Before I could say anything, Quince spoke first.
“I… I should get going. See you tomorrow, Snow.” He bowed hastily to Eshan, who didn’t spare him even a glance.
Quince disappeared, and Eshan approached me, posture relaxing as though he hadn’t just scared someone off.
“My beautiful sister,” he murmured. “What are you doing at H.O.W.L?”
I walked into his arms without hesitation, resting my head against his chest. The strength in him grounded me. My haven was always in my brothers. I loved them fiercely.
“I came to report to work. We’re on a case,” I said when I pulled back. His brows creased.
“Mr Hanba’s case?”
“Yes. You know about it?”
“Kashi is tangled in it.”
“What? My brother?”
He smiled slightly.
“He’s Cherry Billion’s lawyer.”

I frowned, but before I could think too deeply about it, Eshan patted my shoulder, pulling me back.
“Go
stay in my car. I’ll drive you home.” He placed his car key in my palm before I could refuse and walked off, leaving me in the lobby admiring his retreating figure.
Nothing but power and grace.
A proud smile tugged at my lips, warmth rippling through me, until I felt a heavy gaze.
Slowly, I looked up toward the third floor.
Mr Gerald stood there. Staring down at me as if to say he was right.
That I was nothing but a product of nepotism.
