By the time I parked my car in front of the Frost home, Eshan had already arrived. His car sat in the garage. Sleek, silent, waiting like the rest of the house.
I alighted alongside Sera and headed inside. The energy hit me before we even crossed the threshold. Thick, expectant, heavy with unspoken accusations. They were all waiting.
I pushed open the door and stepped into the living room.
I was right.
My father sat on the couch, posture rigid, face carved from stone. Beside him, Viviana sat quiet, composed, eyes downcast like a saint in mourning.
Kashi was there too, Mirena beside him on the loveseat, her hand resting lightly on his knee. Roc stood by the window, arms folded across his chest, jaw tight. His gaze flicking first to Sera as we entered, then to me.
“Good evening,” I said quietly, in unison with Sera.
My father didn’t respond with words. He simply nodded toward the television.
Sweet Gossip Feed was playing, muted, but the ticker at the bottom screamed the headline in bold red.
DARK ALLEY CASE REOPENED AFTER FOUR YEARS – SHOCKING ALLEGATIONS SURFACE
They’d finally managed to air it. Daylight News had refused, but Sweet Gossip had slipped through the cracks long enough for the truth to start bleeding out.
“I thought we had an agreement,” my father said, voice low, rigid, cold as winter steel. “You wouldn’t reopen the case. But you went to the director of H.O.W.L.., my own friend and turned him against me?”
“I didn’t turn him against you, Dad.” The words came fast, quiet, stunned that he would frame it that way. “He promised if I ever wanted to reopen it, I should speak up. Now is the time.”
“Really?” His eyes narrowed. “Now that nothing is going your way? Now that Viviana is finally getting the spotlight she deserves, you think this is how you shift it back to yourself?”
Kashi shifted uncomfortably on the couch, jaw setting hard.
I didn’t respond.
Exhaustion pulled at my chest like lead.
“If this is the talk Eshan said we had to have, I’m not up for it. I’m sorry. I should go.”
“Now you’re being rude,” Viviana said softly, voice sweet poison. “Telling lies, and now rude. Walking out on Father just like you walked out on your parents in the pack.”

I froze mid–step.

I wasn’t supposed to be doing this, not when I was past my surgery deadline, not when every spike of anger could trigger another nosebleed, another blackout.
I lifted my eyes to her, trying to swallow the bitter words, but they came anyway.
“If I were you, I’d keep my mouth shut and continue hiding behind my father.”
She flinched.
“The case is open officially,” I continued, voice low, lethal. “There’s nothing I can do to stop it now. I’d rush to Feroz and tell him to watch his back if I were you.”
I glared.
She swallowed hard.
Tension rose like smoke, choking.
Then Kashi had had enough.
He rose from the couch, crossed to me in three strides and pulled me gently into his arms.
All the hatred, all the rage, dissolved the moment he touched me.
He was soft, always soft with me.
“Come here. Come,” he murmured, patting my back to ease the storm inside me.
He pulled back just enough to search my eyes.
“Snow… let’s stop all this. You hear me? Everything.”
He turned to Father.
“No matter what you say or how you put it, Snow is still the sister I know. I understand you love Viviana because she looks exactly like Mom, but that doesn’t mean she’s the one. Let’s just… I’m exhausted already. Let’s clear the air and… find peace. Maybe Viviana should return to the pack or something. I don’t care.”
“She is not going anywhere, Kashi,” Father said flatly. “The pack is not her home.”
“And here is certainly not her home either, Dad.” Kashi’s yoice was curt. “Listen, I’m sick and tired of all this. I still can’t pinpoint where you’re even coming from. Why are you so against the case opening? Are you so scared of the fact that it might prove she orchestrated the rape?”
“Kashi!” Roc snapped from the window.
But Kashi had had enough.
“Please! I’m sick of it. Totally.”

“Don’t talk to my father like that. Are you crazy?” Roc murmured, anger low, dangerous.
Kashi glared at him, bit back whatever reply he had ready.
“Just count me out of this shit,” he said. “And my girlfriend too. The Daylight news will stop blocking the story from airing. You understand?”
Silence descended terribly, suffocating.
Then Father’s voice came final, declarative.
“If any of you do anything to help Snow with this case… I’m disowning whoever does it. It’s final.”
Kashi went still. Father looked at him squarely.
“Viviana is your sister. You will do everything to help her. Failure to do so means disownment.”
“Then I should start processing the file to get Frost from my name,” Eshan’s voice came from the hallway.
He walked forward into the living room, small present box in hand.
“If this is where you stand, then fine. Snow is my sister. I will do everything to help her.”
“Eshan…”
He took my hand, tender, searched my eyes then sighed softly.
“Where do you stay? You should move in with me. Pinky is coming this week. Let’s stay together until the case ends.”
He was picking a side already.
I hated it.
Hated that the Frost family was splitting, choosing sides and I Hated that Kashi seemed to be leaning toward Viviana while only Eshan stood with me. Who would have thought of this?
“I live fine in the bungalow. I’m fine.”
He nodded, gave me a soft smile, handed me the present box.
“Your birthday gift. Happy birthday. Enjoy your day.”
He kissed my cheek.
“Don’t be late to H.O.W.L. tomorrow.”
