I was already running late when I finally pulled out of the driveway, the ache between my thighs a constant, delicious reminder of last night with every shift of the gear.

By the time I spotted Dove’s car pulled crookedly onto the grassy shoulder of the road, I knew I’d be pushing at least five minutes behind schedule for the H.O.W.L. meeting.

I eased up behind her battered little hatchback and gave a quick honk. She didn’t move at first. Then the driver’s door flew open and she thrust her head out, squinting against the morning sun.

The second she recognized my car, my face, her jaw literally dropped.

She scrambled back inside for a heartbeat, grabbed her bag and whatever else she needed, then bolted

over.

The passenger door yanked open and she slid in beside me, still gaping like she’d seen a ghost.

You rented a car, I see. Right?

I rolled my eyes, lips twitching despite myself.

That’s the first thing my best friend says after not even calling yesterday, on my birthday? Please.

Silence dropped between us like a curtain. I glanced sideways and found her staring, quiet, intense.

There was real sadness in her eyes, the kind that made my stomach twist. Maybe she’d been carrying her own storm all this time.

Dove?

It happened again,” she murmured, swallowing hard. Dad.

What?My voice sharpened. You should’ve told my dad. He was on strict orders, restrain and no visits except weekends.

Yesterday was the weekend, she said quietly, exhaling through her nose. She looked exhausted, dark circles, shoulders tight but then, like always, she forced a small smile and reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small scaled vial first, her mother’s herbal shop logo pressed into the wax stopper, then a little cluster of packaged snacks, each one labeled in childish, colorful handwriting with the names of her triplet younger sisters.

From Mom and the girls,” she said, voice softening. Those troublesome little monsters actually saved up their pocket money for your favorite snacks. Can you believe it? This is from them.

I took the snacks slowly, fingers brushing the crinkled wrappers. It wasn’t expensive. It was priceless. My throat tightened with sudden, overwhelming emotion, the kind of love that didn’t need money to shout.

OOG

O

And Mom brewed this herself,Dove continued, pressing the vial into my palm. Only she makes it. Morning and night, she said. She thinks it’ll make you strong, maybe keep illness away, I don’t know. She justshe just wants you well, Snow.

I nodded, blinking fast, and set it carefully beside Cupid’s packed lunch in the back seat.

Then Dove reached in one last time and drew out a delicate silver necklace. The pendant was small but unmistakable.

The crescent moon crest of Mooncrest pack, my birth pack, the one I’d spent years running from.

I looked up. She was smiling now, soft, encouraging.

Maybe it’s time you started embracing the name Mooncrest. It’s yours.” She fastened it around my neck herself, cool metal settling against my skin. Happy birthday, Snow. Mom sends her regards. The girls too.

I exhaled shakily, unable to speak past the lump in my throat. I tucked the necklace under my collar where it rested warm against my chest, then moved the snacks and potion to the backseat next to Cupid’s neatly wrapped lunch container.

Dove’s gaze followed. One eyebrow arched.

Breakfast?

I swatted her hand away gently when she reached for it.

It’s my lunch. Made specially for me.”

By who?Her eyes narrowed, already knowing, already daring me to say it out loud. Cupid Godlike?

Yeah.”

She went very still, staring at me in something close to awe.

You two seem to be taking things seriously. He can bedomestic like this?

I leaned back against the headrest, letting the memory of this morning wash over me.

His careful hands in the bath, the way he’d chosen my outfit like it mattered, the soft kiss before he carried me. The impossible daydream of him as husband. Father of my children. Home.

Cupid’s been supportive. More than you know, Dove. Financially, emotionally, mentally. He’s.. so good. And I’m terrified it’s all a dream, that I’ll wake up back in Ares’s house, still being lied to, still alone.

Dove shook her head slowly, firmly.

This is reality, Snow. And from what I have seen of him so far, he loves you enough to make the reality stay. I’ve seen men like him. They fuck and disappear, never look back. But he stayed. He knows your secrets, saw your weaknesses, and he’s still here. You can’t lose him. At all costs, you can’t.

I nodded, throat tight. I would clutch him so tight my fingers would bruise. I couldn’t lose him.

My thoughts shifted to her, her family, the weight she carried.
