Ares
“What are you talking about? What?!”

My mother snapped, shoving the glass cup at me. I dodged just in time, the glass sailed past my head and shattered against the wall in a spray of shards and water.
The room froze.
It had been all over the news. spreading from the human regions down into werewolf territory like wildfire.
Feroz Alpha would be brought in for questioning tomorrow, and by the gods, I knew they’d find something. I knew that man. I knew how unstable, unpredictable, and suspicious he was. One wrong question and he’d unravel everything with his weird look.
When I heard Wrinks and Zayah had been arrested for their crimes, panic had clawed up my throat.
When I learned today that Viviana had gone to H.O.W.L. with Kashi as her lawyer, I knew the lines were being drawn. Sides were forming. And I was running out of time.
I’d rushed to Neils’s house, screaming at the top of my lungs, not realizing my mother and sister were home and within earshot. Now everything was a mess.
“The last time he was here, he was edgy and antsy,” Ranta said to our mother, voice shaking. “I told you something was going on, Mom.”
My mother’s face twisted, frustration and fear warring across her features. She swallowed hard.
“Please tell me you have nothing to do with the Dark Alley case. Tell me now!”
I didn’t speak.
My eyes drifted slowly to Neils. He sat quietly in his chair, glasses perched on his nose, expression as innocent and calm as ever.
I wondered. Should I implicate him too? Should I tell the truth about his involvement? But I knew his marriage would be destroyed, and I knew how much his wife and son meant to him. He loved his family more than anything.
“I… I wasn’t directly involved in the case,” I said finally. “I was only doing what I was asked to do.”
My sister and mother shared a long, unreadable look, unable to decide whether I’d just made sense or lost
my
mind.
“You’re an adult, for goodness‘ sake,” my mother snapped. “Were you forced?”
“Yes,” I answered quickly. “You don’t know what Feroz is capable of. He’s a crazy man. I had to do what he wanted. I… I only stood there to watch while he did all his stuff with Snow, and then I acted like her savior.”
My mother and sister went pale. Horror washed over their faces, more horrified by the revelation than by what might happen to
Ranta slowly turned to her husband, eyes asking one silent question.
“… I know nothing about it, honey,” Neils murmured quietly.

I almost raised an eyebrow. He looked so innocent, so calm. That had always been his greatest shield.
Ranta paused, searched his eyes again then swallowed hard.

“We never liked Snow from the beginning,” my mother said, voice trembling. “We saw her as nothing but dirty from rape. But what you did is beyond forgiving, Ares. What can be done? Eshan Frost is on the case, and I’ve read about that man. He won’t stop until he gets the job done.”
“You were only asked to save Snow,” Ranta said, glaring at me now. “Why then did you marry her?”
I sighed, completely helpless.
“I did it for Viviana.”
“You fool!” My mother snapped again, rushing forward to smack my arm. “Why would you do anything for that girl? Don’t you see it’s all over the news that she has the support of her father now? You have nothing. Your dad is in a wheelchair. He can’t do anything for you.”
Tension flared hot and sharp.
Ranta turned to Neils, clearly concerned.
“What can be done, honey? Ares is my younger brother. We can’t let him go to jail.”
Neils looked up, jaw set. He was angry. I knew why. I had ignored his warning. He’d told me to act innocent, to stay quiet. But after the interrogation and the mention of Love Avenue, I couldn’t sleep.
I’d paid Wrinks and Zayah a hefty sum to get rid of Ossy J, leak the news to the press, anything to make them drop the case. They didn’t. And now Feroz had been called in.
“He will go to prison,” Neils said matter–of–factly.
I went cold.
“I didn’t rape Snow!”
“For being an accomplice, you’ll serve time,” he continued calmly. “For paying for Ossy J’s assassination, you’ll serve more.”
