Chapter 322
Snowflakes
“Miss Snow, Kim is awake but he is not really stable. Will you come to check on him?”
The text from Tally V woke me that morning, and I went completely still.
Kim is awake?

I threw off the duvet and rushed to the bathroom, heart racing. I had to see him, had to ask the few crucial questions that could finally tie everything together before we stepped back into court.
After a quick shower, I hurried to my closet, dressed in a rush, grabbed my bag, and headed to the kitchen. I opened the refrigerator for a drink when the doorbell rang.
I paused, turning slowly toward the door.
It was a brand–new year. Bright, fresh, full of possibility. Cupid and I had been seen together openly for weeks now, no longer hiding our affection.
The case was nearly closed. Tomorrow we’d return to H.O.W.L. Cupid had already told me he’d be at Godlike for an important meeting, so who could this be?
Quietly, I left the refrigerator and approached the door. When I opened it and saw who stood there, a small frown creased my brow in confusion.
Why are they here?
“Snow.” My mother’s voice trembled as she clutched her bag tightly. Behind her stood Nero and Dante. “Can I… can we come in, please?”
“No.” The word came out fast, instinctive. I didn’t need to think about it. I wanted nothing to do with her, Nero, or Dante. Not now, not ever.
“But you can’t do this, Snow. I won’t take up much of your time, please.” She took a shaky step forward, swallowing hard. “Just a few words, and we’ll be on our way.”
I didn’t budge from the doorway. I stood firm, waiting to hear whatever she thought she could say.
“I uh…” She faltered when she realized I wouldn’t open the door wider. “Snow, I’ve come to beg you. Please… why don’t you drop the case?”
I raised an eyebrow, genuinely confused. Which case? The one everyone was talking about? The one that was almost over?
“Feroz has been bad, I know, but… but he can repent. Just let him…”
“I have an important place to be today. I don’t have time for this.” I moved to close the door.
Nero suddenly wrenched it open from my grip and stepped inside, towering over me.
“You’re the real architect of all this,” he spat, voice low and venomous. “Because of you, our father is preparing to disown us. Because of you, the Alpha seat I was supposed to take has been ripped away. Because of you…”

His words exploded into a bellow. In the blink of an eye, his hand shot out and clamped around my throat, squeezing hard.
My vision blurred instantly. No one moved to stop him. It was as though they wanted me gone, wanted me dead.
I thrashed wildly, clawing at his wrist, but he was too strong. My lungs burned. My sight darkened at the edges.
Then something ignited deep inside me. A sudden rush surged through my veins like wildfire. A low, primal groan tore from my chest.
In desperation, I raked at his face. Paws, actual paws sprouted from my fingertips, slashing across his cheek with brutal force. Blood sprayed. He released me with a shocked hiss, stumbling back.
I crashed to the floor, coughing violently, gasping for air.
Everything stilled.
Paws?
I flicked my gaze down just in time to see the furred claws retract slowly, shifting back into human fingers. My breath came out shaky.
My wolf… she was surfacing.
“Her wolf has been freed from the shackles we bound her with,” my mother whispered in a mix of awe and terror. She grabbed Nero’s arm. “Let’s go. She’s dangerous now. Let’s all go.”
They scrambled out. Footsteps faded down the hall.
I couldn’t move at first. My fingers had turned to paws. My wolf was returning.
Despite the blood on my skin, Nero’s blood, I felt a smile break across my face. Then a laugh bubbled up, soft and disbelieving.
I wasn’t dying.
I sat up quickly, the attack already fading into the background. Joy surged through me, bright and fierce.
Did that mean my womb had been healed too?
Oh, I needed to call Mrs. Castle right now to check.
