The tunnel swallowed us whole. Dark, damp, endless until the headlights carved through the gloom and spat us out into the hidden heart of the underworld.
Marlik’s breath caught audibly beside me as the car eased onto the wide, shadowed lane.
The sky above was perpetual, starless black.
A thousand workers moved in disciplined rhythm. Crates shifting, seals snapping, voices low and clipped.
The moment the engine died, every head turned. Tools paused mid–motion. Eyes locked on the car, on me.
I stepped out first. One slow nod.
“Continue.”
They obeyed instantly. Heads dipped in deference, then turned back to their tasks as though I were nothing more than a passing shadow.
That was the rule here. My presence was command, never spectacle.
Marlik opened his door more slowly. His boots hit the stone floor with a soft echo. He stood, turning in a slow circle, jaw slack, eyes wide with something between awe and disbelief.
I understood. This place was designed to humble even the proudest.
I led the way without a word. He fell in step close behind, close enough that I could feel the tension rolling off him in waves.
As we passed through the ranks, men and women bowed sharply, eyes flicking curiously to the stranger at my side. No one spoke. No one dared.
We entered the cavernous hall, echoing, vaulted, smelling of metal and chemicals then pushed through to the final chamber.
The sight hit like a physical blow.
Rows upon rows of towering stacks, pallets wrapped in black plastic, crates stamped with coded seals, the air itself thick with the faint, acrid promise of what lay inside.
Workers moved among them like ants tending a queen, efficient, silent, relentlessly packing the last of the product for imminent release.
Marlik slowed. Stopped. Stared.
I let him take it in.
We continued until we reached the vault. I stepped forward; the biometric scanner hummed to life, red light sweeping across my
irises.
A deep, mechanical groan rolled through the floor as the massive screw–lock disengaged. The door swung inward with ponderous weight.

I stepped inside. Marlik followed.
Only two people had ever stood here besides the men who help stocked it. My father and now him.

The stacks rose higher than either of us, a fortress of wealth measured not in gold but in power. In ruin. In lives it could claim or
save.
Marlik turned in a slow circle, throat working as he swallowed.
“It’s worth more than you could spend in ten lifetimes, Marlik,” I said quietly. “The batches we passed on the way, they hit the streets soon. Final order pending.”
“It’s… huge.” His voice came out rough, almost reverent. He looked at me then, really looked. “But Jahan… this is Feroz’s life work. He’ll find it. Or die trying.”
I stepped closer, voice dropping to match the hush of the vault.
“How about we make sure it’s the second one?”
“Jahan…”
Before he could finish, I reached into my jacket and extended the folded lab sheet.
He took it slowly, brow furrowing in confusion until

The color drained from his face in an instant.
He stared at the results. At the positive marker. At the
estational estimate.
Slowly, agonizingly, he lifted his gaze to mine, searching for the lie.
“Snow gave it to me tonight,” I said. “Said her friend is pregnant. We both know who the father is. And she said… Dove wants it gone. Abortion. By any means necessary.”
Marlik’s eyes flew wide.
“W…why?”
“Why not?” I countered softly. “You’re Marlik Rogue. Crimes cleared, yes, but the stain remains. Ex–convict. Rogue. Unemployed. Dove just lost her mother. She’s got three little sisters looking to her now. Moon goddess knows her reporting career do not pay much. Another mouth to feed with a father like you? It’s a burden she can’t carry and Unless…” I let the word hang. “Unless you prove you can be responsible. And words won’t do it, Marlik. Action will.”
He stood frozen, the paper trembling faintly in his hand. Breaking right in front of me.
I closed the last step between us.
“What if I told you my father. the godfather, the Alpha who took me in is willing to employ you?”
“Liar,” he breathed. Then, quieter. “Selling on the streets?”
I scoffed.
“In bulk. Interfacing with other dons. Up front? A clean job. Manager. Maybe even owner of your own legitimate front while the real

work stays in the shadows. Don’t ask about the pay. My net worth answers that question for you.”
He was thinking now, really thinking. Weighing risk against reward. Future against past.

“That way,” I pressed, “you stand on your own. You provide for your pup. And if you want Dove too, if you want to step up for her and her younger sisters, you’ll have the means to do it. Clean hands on the surface. Real power underneath.”
He looked up at the towering stacks again. Swallowed once. Hard.
“How about Feroz?” he asked finally. “How about Mother?”
“We’ll handle Mother. Sweet–talk her. Yasmin’s safety, everyone’s safety will be locked down.”
“But Feroz…”
I stepped even closer, voice dropping to a lethal whisper.
