I opened the bedroom door with exquisite care, half expecting to find the bed empty or Cupid already awake and vanished into the night as he so often did.

But there he remained, exactly as I had left him, curled beneath the coverlet, sleeping with a profound, almost unnatural stillness.

My heart lurched painfully in my chest at the sight of him so unguarded, so achingly peaceful.

Softly, I crossed the room and knelt beside the bed. My fingers trembled as they slid into his dark hair, stroking the strands back from his forehead with reverent tenderness.

This version of him, this quiet, vulnerable Cupid felt like something sacred, something I wanted to cradle forever against the cruelty of the world.

lingered there a moment longer than I should have, memorizing the gentle flutter of his lashes, the faint part of his lips, before forcing myself to rise and leave him in peace.

In the living room, I lifted the phone and dialed the hospital’s private line.

Please, can you connect me to Marlik? This is Snow,I said, keeping my voice low.

A brief hold, then the familiar timbre of his voice came through.

Hi.

Marlik,I breathed, the word carrying a soft sigh of relief. How are things? How is mother?

A heavy silence stretched between us before he answered, his tone subdued.

Recovering. She’s asleep now. The nurses aren’t asking for payment.

You shouldn’t worry about that,I told him gently. It’s a family hospital. Mother was admitted under my name as guardian, she won’t be charged anything.

Oh.A pause, then quietly, Yeahthank you.

could hear the weight of gratitude in those two small words.

Then, almost hesitantly, he asked, Jahanhow is he?

Asleep,” I replied, matching his hushed tone. He needs the rest.

More than anyone,Marlik said with quiet sincerity. He’s been running his whole life. Never a single moment of real peace.

The words struck me like a blade, twisting deep in my chest until my heart felt raw and shredded. I closed my eyes against the sudden sting.

Silence fell again, comfortable yet sorrowful, before I gathered my courage.

I’m going to make dinner,I said. How about I bring some over? Andperhaps Yasmin could come with me, stay for a little

while? Just until your mother is discharged?

Marlik didn’t answer right away. I could almost see him, head bowed, fingers tightening around the phone, turning the offer over in

his mind.

Don’t let me burden you,he finally murmured.

Burden?I echoed, genuinely stunned. Yasmin is like a sister to me. I’m coming to get her, okay?

Before he could protest, I heard rapid footsteps burst into the room on his end, then a breathless voice.

How is she? Where’s Cupid?

Desmond. He had finally arrived.

When we had raced to the hospital earlier, he’d received an urgent summons from his mother and bolted for the Moon Tower. Now ne was here.

She’s fine,Marlik answered calmly. Jahan is at Snow’s.

A charged silence followed. Without Cupid’s easy presence to bridge them, the air between Desmond and Marlik always felt taut, ragile.

I shouldI should go check on him then,” Desmond said at last, already turning to leave.

Marlik’s voice stopped him.

How about you give Yasmin a ride to Snow’s?

Jesmond paused. No immediate reply. Then I heard his footsteps draw closer; he must have taken the phone.

fis voice came through to me, softer now, laced with urgency.

Is Cupid okay? I need to talk to him. It’s very important. He hasn’t been answering my calls. Is he there? Please, put him on.

The seriousness in his tone sent a chill down my spine. I nodded uselessly into the empty air and hurried back toward the

edroom, settling on the edge of the mattress beside Cupid.

placed a gentle hand on his shoulder and shook him lightly.

Cupid?

Nothing. Not even a flutter of lashes. Just the same deep, unmoving stillness.

Cupid?I called again, more tenderly, though every part of me recoiled at the thought of disturbing him.

Still nothing. Only the slow, even rise and fall of his chest. My lips trembled, frustration and helpless worry coiled tight in my throat.

exhaled shakily.
