I watched him tighten the last boot lace with deliberate, practiced movements, then stride out of the bedroom toward his study

once more.

The comb I’d been pretending to use slipped from my fingers and I followed him quickly, heart already thudding with unease.

When I reached the study, Cupid was nowhere in sight. I had seen him walk straight into this room, there was no other exit.

Confusion twisted in my chest until, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a section of the wall sliding open silently, revealing a hidden passage.

Stunned, I stepped through, only to emerge into a cold, cavernous room that made my knees buckle beneath me.

In the Frost Family, I had always known we were worth far too much. I had seen stacks of cash more times than I could count in my life.

But never, not once, had I witnessed anything like this. Towering piles of crisp, new notes stood like frozen beds, cold hard cash stretching wall to wall in obscene abundance.

It’s illegal money,Cupid said from somewhere ahead, his voice low and matteroffact, waiting to be laundered.

I spun toward the sound. He was already walking away, not even glancing back to see if the sight had shaken me.

Swallowing hard against the dryness in my throat, I hurried after him into the next room and froze in the doorway. Ice settled deep in my spine, spreading like frost.

Guns hung on the walls in perfect, lethal rows, gleaming under harsh lights.

On the opposite side, neatly arranged shelves held syringes, vials, and bottles of substances I instantly recognized as deadly poisons.

This had to be the arsenal he used, the very tools that had taken down Feroz’s men and Mr Mane.

I stepped further inside, eyes darting everywhere, until they locked on a row of darts. The sight slammed memories into me like a physical blow.

The darts that killed Feroz’s brother, These were identical. Sera had performed the autopsy; she’d noted the strange mark on the body and mentioned something about the heart stopping abruptly.

We’d all dismissed it as a natural heart attack, brushing her words aside. But no. It had been murder. Cupid’s murder.

He was toying with Yasmin,Cupid said quietly, as though he had plucked the exact thought from my mind. Sleeping with her even before she came of age. I had to kill him.

His voice carried no remorse, only cold certainty.

Don’t touch anything,he added, softer now. I won’t have anything happen to you.

He moved to stand before a particular bottle on the shelf. I nearly scoffed aloud.

He cared so fiercely about protecting me, yet when it came to others, he didn’t hesitate to end lives without a flicker of guilt.

A man like Cupid was dangerous to love, dangerous to keep close but it’s more perfect than having him as a foe because surely he was the worst kind of energy to have as enemy.

He stared at the bottle for a long, heavy moment, jaw tight, as though wrestling with some inner decision.

Then, hesitating one final time, he turned away and reached instead for a knife.

He slid it into his boot, grabbed a pistol, pocketed a handful of silver bullets, and started toward the exit, only to stop again.

His shoulders stiffened. With a sharp set of his jaw, he snatched a length of thin cord, looped it around the neck of the poison bottle, and yanked it free from the row.

Together we left the hidden vault.

We’ll have Almira get checked,he said as we headed toward the elevator. That alone can prove my innocence, right?

I nodded, throat too tight to speak at first. I’ll have Sera do it. She’s the only forensic expert we can trust.

The elevator carried us down to the garage in silence.

Cupid guided me gently into the passenger seat before sliding behind the wheel.

We roared out through the hidden tunnel into the late night. By the time we reached the coastal dock, where we would board a boat to pursue the cruise ship hosting the Godlike’s lavish vacation, the sky had begun to lighten, turning a soft, innocent blue.

Cupid killed the engine and stepped out.

Wait here,he said. Let me go rent a boat.”

He started to walk away, but I lunged forward and grabbed his wrist.

Let me,I insisted. You’re a celebrity. You’ll be recognized in seconds. I should go and

I know people are here,he interrupted calmly. This isn’t the first time the Godlike have taken a vacation cruise. Let me handle it.

He slipped from my grasp and disappeared toward the docks. I sat alone in the car, the seconds stretching into agonizing eternities.

Without him beside me, the world felt hollow, terrifyingly empty. Two minutes passed, and panic clawed up my throat. I couldn’t stay still.

I climbed out, scanning the darkness, terrified something had already gone wrong until I saw a boat being untethered from its mooring just ahead. An older man bowed respectfully before Cupid.

Relief crashed through me, shaky and sharp. My mate turned and walked back toward me, calm as ever.
