I left the estate behind and rode toward the highway, heading for my loft under the deepening night sky. A silent smile curled at the corner of my lips.
The way she had said it, eyes wide open, blazing with absolute certainty, that she’d choose me over and over again, anytime, any day. I had already won in life. I said it inwardly to myself, the words settling like warm steel in my chest.
I took another turn, and that was when I noticed it. A car that had been following me ever since I left the estate gates.
Mafia member? My first thought.
I glanced in the rearview mirror. The driver’s face was shadowed beneath a low cap, but the scent hit me before I could second- guess myself.
Ares.
Hadn’t the cops found him? Why the hell was he trailing me?
I said nothing. I kept riding toward the loft, my heart ringing with dark, joyful anticipation. Perhaps this was how destiny had written his story and how it would end.
But I thought he was supposed to be a smart businessman.
Why trail me, knowing exactly what I was capable of? Knowing I was a murderer?
I scoffed happily under my breath and finally hit the highway, praying he would follow. He did.
I turned sharply, pulling into the tunnel. Lights flared on overhead as I rode deeper. He followed right behind, probably thinking the tunnel would spit him out onto a new road. No.
He had just driven straight into my den.
The gate closed behind us with a degrading, final clang. I stopped the car and looked over at him through the windshield. He sat frozen in his seat, the frantic slam of his heart echoing against his rib cage like a trapped animal.
I ignored him. I stepped out, walked to the elevator, and rode upstairs to my living room.
Humming softly under my breath, I headed straight to the bedroom, pulled out my suitcase, and began packing only the essentials I would need.
I zipped the suitcase shut just as the elevator dinged again. He had arrived upstairs. How daring
Without turning around, I walked to my study and began disconnecting every device methodical, unhurted.
Then I opened the door to the cold money room. For one heart–stopping second I stared at the stacks, the fortune bom of blood and shadows then slowly slammed the door closed.
Years from now, I would come back and decide what to do with it. No tonight.
At last I stepped out into the living room. Ares was rushing to hide behind a pillar like a cornered rat, I walked over calmly and

He stared at me as though I were insane, as though I were a full–blown psychopath. Maybe I was. Children raised in broken homes, shattered families, rarely grew up sane like the normal kids and pups.
“I’ve always known you were dubious,” he spat, tucking his cellphone into his pocket and edging toward the elevator. “I’ll tell the whole world what you really are.”
I slammed him against the wall savagely. He crumpled, dazed, crawling backward on the floor. I laughed coldly, low, amused.
He was so delusional.
I strode over, yanked the cellphone from his pocket, and scrolled through the photos he’d taken of the place.
I laughed again, sharper this time.
What did he think he could do with them? Did he seriously believe he would find his way back out?
This was a fucking rainforest. An illusion woven from a single fractured piece of my heart. No one left unless I allowed it.
I yanked him up by the collar and dragged him down the hidden stairs to the underground cell. I had prepared this space for something else entirely, bondage, pleasure, control but this would serve just as well.
I punched his face harder than necessary. Then I flipped him upside down, pinned him, and extended a single claw.
I sliced the side of his neck just enough. Blood welled immediately, slow and steady, dripping down his skin in dark rivulets.
