The car stopped before my house, not the one buried deep in the rainforest, but the one I stay in when work becomes too much and I have to remain in the city.
Desmond drove in and pulled up at the front, but I didn’t move. I kept my eyes fixed on the window, staring at nothing, my mind nowhere near this place.
All I could think about was her. Just her.
“It’s about her, right?” Desmond’s voice came, low, careful.
I ignored him until his tone tightened.
“Cupid.”
That got to me. He only calls me Cupid when things are serious.
Slowly, I turned and stared at him; watched his eyes darken as the truth dawned on him.
“You have been sleeping with her?” he asked.
I looked away, exhaling sharply, running my fingers through my hair, overwhelmed, frustrated, feeling something I shouldn’t be feeling.
“I’m going to kill her husband,” I murmured suddenly, arriving at the decision without hesitation, without thought. “Send someone tonight, Desmond. Clean and silent. Poison will be better. Take him off the way quietly.”
“Boss…”
I turned my gaze back to him, done pretending. If anyone knows my mind, my temper, my capacity, it’s him.
“Just have her husband killed,” I said simply. “That way I know no one will ever touch her again.”
He stared at me for a long time, searching my face, swallowing hard.
“This is about her past, right? The rape?”
My glare came sharp and deadly, my voice dropping to a cold that could kill.
“Say anything about her being raped, and I will kill you before you breathe again.”

Silence. Heavy. He understood. He knows I don’t make empty threats. A threat from me is law.
Desmond nodded, accepting it, then quietly handed me the file he’d been holding.
“Before you kill Ares Bani,” he said calmly, “you should know about her rape case. ‘Dark Alley. That’s what it was called. It’s old, and she ordered the investigation closed four years ago.”
I lowered my gaze to the file and slowly pulled it open.
Her details. Her name. Her life. Snowflakes Frost staring back at me in black–and–white
paper.
“She is twenty–two. The biological daughter of Alpha…”
“I know that part,” I muttered, pulling out the photo beneath.
I froze.
My throat tightened immediately.
It was taken by detectives after the attack. The image of her the night she was found.
My eyes slid down to the case details, and a cold chill shot through me.
“She was raped by nine men,” Desmond murmured. “Brutal. Stabbed sixteen times. She didn’t die.”
I went pale. Completely pale.
I flipped through another page, seeing the part about therapy, trauma, PTSD.
“She suffered from PTSD and trauma. Men probably scare her. Dicks do.”
I swallowed, disagreeing instantly.
“Not mine,” I said quietly. “She’s submissive to me… in bed.”
“Maybe she sees you as someone capable of giving her what she never had.”
I looked at him as he continued.
“Love. True love. Selfless love. Not from her brothers. I mean romantic love. But you can’t, Cupid. I know you. You control an empire. Romance has no room in your life. And there are great obstacles. A thick wedge. You’re from different worlds. She catches criminals, and you are king of criminals. She stands with the Frosts and you are the foundation of Godlike. You

need to forget about her, Boss. Before my uncle grows suspicious and realizes you’ve been sleeping with someone without his approval.”
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t.
I only stared at the picture without seeing anything. Then I flipped to another detail that made my brow rise.
“Who found her first in that dark alley?” I asked.
“Ares Bani,” Desmond replied. “Her husband.”
I stared at him, wondering if he saw what I saw. He nodded.
“That’s why you should look at her case before ordering his execution. In any crime scene, the first witness is usually the first suspect.”
“When did he arrive?”
“No exact time. The file just says he was there after the deed.”
“Snowflakes dropped the case?”
“Yes. Her human brothers were furious. They were still investigating when she suddenly called it off. A month later she married Ares and cut ties with her human family. They didn’t support it, but she said she was in love.”
“And four years later she realized she made the biggest mistake of her life,” I murmured, closing the file.
I swallowed.

“Him. What do you think of him?”
“Shady,” Desmond said honestly. “He climbed to the top overnight. If we dig, we’ll find something. But I strongly advise we shouldn’t…‘
“Contact Fenris,” I cut him off, handing the documents back. “Tell him to run a private investigation on Ares Bani. I want the results when I return from my trip to the Dravens.”
Desmond stared at me, jaw tight, hating the idea but unable to stop me.
“Boss…”
“Breaking news,” a loud voice boomed from the billboard ahead, interrupting him.
We both looked.

“Tomorrow morning, the Sacred Court will host Ares Bani, CEO of F.A.A.R, and Snowflakes Frost, his wife of four years, summoned for divorce proceedings…”
The rest faded into the background.
I stared up at the billboard. At her picture beside that man.
Snowflakes Frost.
The woman who opened herself to me without trembling. Who followed me home without fear. Who trusted me with her body, her voice, her breath.
Now I understood why she let me in so quickly. Because she is leaving him. She is finally breaking away.
The realization made a long, deep sigh escape me. Now I knew how to reach her and I knew I had been mad at her over nothing.
I shouldn’t have been that harsh this morning.
Hell.
