The silence following Mu Lihua’s entrance didn’t last long.
Outside the tree house, the sound of hurried footsteps and murmurs grew into a roar of confusion.
Hu Yan dragging the Tribe Leader’s mate through the dirt had sent shockwaves through the entire tribe.
To the tribe members, this was a violation of every social rule; a male beastman was never supposed to be so violent with a female, especially one who was technically his mother-in-law.
"What is happening?" an elder beastman shouted. "Hu Yan, let her go! Have you lost your mind?"
"Is the Witch Doctor’s mate trying to kill her own mother?" another female cried out in horror.
A crowd of dozens had gathered, trailing behind Hu Yan all the way to the Tribe Leader’s house.
They stood in a dense circle, demanding answers.
Inside the tree house, Mu Lihua was no longer screaming. She was trembling like a leaf in a storm, her eyes darting from the bare, rose-marked chest of Su Mingxuan to the cold, murderous gaze of Su Qinglan.
Su Mingxuan stood up.
His movements were slow, but every muscle in his body was coiled with a terrifying, primal rage.
He didn’t look like a father or a leader anymore; he looked like a predator who had finally found the beast that harmed his mate.
"Su... Mingxuan..." Mu Lihua stammered, her voice cracking. "I... I can explain. That totem... it’s a trick! She is using black magic to confuse you!"
"A trick?" Su Mingxuan’s voice was a low, vibrating growl that made the walls of the tree house shake.
"So you are saying my own daughter is tricking me, while you, a vile creature is telling the truth. Mu Lihua, go see your face in the river; what kind of disgusting creature have you become?"
"You are more evil than an evil ferocious beast; at least they devour the prey in one go, but you...you have toyed with me for twenty long years."
"If not for my daughter, I would have never found this truth, and you are telling me that my daughter is manipulating me."
He walked toward her, and for every step he took, she took two back in pure terror. She looks at the claws that had appeared on his hands.
"Twenty years, Mu Lihua. For twenty years, I lived with a stone in my heart because I thought I was a traitor. I watched my daughter suffer under your hands because I felt I owed you my life."
"I gave you a child!" she shrieked, her back hitting the wall. "I am the mother of the Fox Tribe’s future!"
"You are a liar," he spat. He reached out with a hand as fast as a strike of a snake, grabbing her arm with such force that she let out a piercing yelp.
"Ahhh....Su Mingxuan...you are hurting me."
He didn’t say another word. He turned and began to drag her. He didn’t care about the pain she was in; he felt a physical repulsion just touching her skin.
This was the woman who had ruined his life, stolen his joy, and driven his true love into the jaws of death.
He felt he could tear her apart bone by bone right here; just looking at her face made him nauseous, and the killing intent was surging behind his red-rimmed eyes, but he needed the truth first.
Su Mingxuan kicked the door of the fence open and dragged Mu Lihua out into the bright sunlight.
The crowd of beastmen and females gasped in unison, falling back as they saw their Tribe Leader, bare-chested and covered in dried blood, dragging his mate like a piece of rotten meat. With a powerful heave, he threw her into the center of the tribe square.
Mu Lihua fell hard into the mud with a pig-like scream, her elbows scratching against the stones and her fine clothes staining brown.
She scrambled to sit up, her hair matted with dirt, looking at the faces of the people who used to respect her.
Twenty years ago, Mulan had been the light of the Fox Tribe...a female who brought knowledge, fire, and kindness. Her sudden death and the way she vanished had been a dark cloud over the village for two decades.
"What? Wang Mulan?" the villagers whispered, their voices rising in an uproar.
"Is the Tribe Leader saying she didn’t just disappear and die outside the forest?"
"We all saw her leave! We thought she abandoned us!"
An elderly female stepped forward from the crowd. Her hair was white, and her back was slightly bent, but her eyes were clear.
She had been one of the few who supported the love between the Tribe Leader and Mulan back then. She bowed deeply to Su Mingxuan, her voice trembling with emotion.
"Tribe Leader," she said, her eyes searching his face.
"What are you saying? Did this woman... did Mu Lihua have a hand in Wang Mulan’s disappearance? We all believed the story that she left because she was heartbroken!"
Su Mingxuan’s expression softened for a moment as he looked at the old woman. He stepped forward and took her weathered hands in his.
"Grandma Su," he said, his voice thick with twenty years of suppressed grief.
"You saw it yourself. You knew how much I loved her. We were supposed to spend our lives together. Everyone believed we didn’t mate because I made a mistake with Mu Lihua."
He turned back to the crowd, his voice booming so everyone could hear.
"But the truth was hidden behind a lie! Wang Mulan and I are true mates. Look at my chest! The black magic has finally broken!"
He pointed to the glowing rose totem. The older beastmen gasped. They remembered that the same mark was also on Wang Mulan’s forehead.
