Su Qinglan’s heart softened. She knew it. This entire mood was definitely about his brother. She didn’t interrupt, only nodding her head to encourage him to keep going.
Rong Ye closed his eyes tightly. "Even though I have taken my revenge, and even though my brother is finally dead... my chest still feels completely empty. And... I really don’t want to go back to Fox Beast City."
His voice grew softer and softer with his last words, fading into a tiny murmur.
If Su Qinglan hadn’t been sitting right next to him, she wouldn’t have heard it clearly at all. But she understood exactly what was bothering him now. He absolutely dreaded the idea of returning to that city.
She looked at him, her mouth still completely filled with the large piece of meat she was chewing. She swallowed it down and said firmly, "Then don’t go. No wind in this world will ever take my husband away from me. I won’t allow it."
To prove her point, she immediately leaned backward, dropping her weight directly into his arms.
Rong Ye’s heart leaped. He instantly wrapped his arms around her, nuzzling his face deeply into her neck and shoulder.
"I won’t leave my female to go anywhere either," he murmured, a smile finally returning to his lips.
Still, he couldn’t completely hide the deep sadness lingering in his eyes.
Su Qinglan understood his pain completely. Fox Beast City was the exact place where he had lost his entire birth family. It was the place where he had been brutally hunted like a wild animal by his own elder brother.
But now that his brother was dead, Rong Ye was the only remaining successor of the Nine Tailed Fox bloodline of Fox Beast City.
She knew the citizens and elders of that city must be desperately searching for him to take the throne, but Rong Ye wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.
"So," Su Qinglan finally asked softly, "are the people of Fox Beast City bothering you?"
Rong Ye instantly sat straight up, his eyes widening in total shock. "Lan Lan! How... how do you know that?"
Looking at his silly, stunned face, Su Qinglan couldn’t help but chuckle. She proudly puffed out her chest and smirked. "I know everything. After all, am I not your goddess?"
Rong Ye nodded rapidly, looking at her with a look of pure, starstruck worship.
Su Qinglan hid her smile and continued, tracing the facts for him.
"So the people of Fox Beast City are bothering you, begging you to come back and lead them. But you don’t want to go back because that place holds too many terrible memories for you, right?"
Rong Ye nodded again, his eyes locked onto hers.
"And most importantly," Su Qinglan smiled warmly, cupping his cheek, "you don’t want to leave our warm, happy family here."
Rong Ye nodded a third time, looking at her like she was the answer to all his troubles. He felt an immense weight lift off his shoulders. She really, truly understood everything without him even having to explain it.
After a moment of silence, she suddenly tilted her head and asked, "How loyal do you think those fox beastmen are to you?"
Rong Ye looked at her, blinking. "What do you mean?"
Su Qinglan rested her chin on her palm, her gaze thoughtful.
"After all, those same people served your father. Then they served your brother. They have followed Fox Beast City for almost decades. So, would they truly be loyal to you?"
