Over in the corner of the courtyard, Duo Duo was a complete, sobbing mess in Shen Mochen’s arms.
Her big, tear-filled eyes were fixed on the sight of her furry puppy-brothers getting ready to board with Auntie Su.
The realization hit her all at once: she was going to be left all alone once again!
How could her tiny heart accept this?! She didn’t want to stay in this big, quiet place by herself. She wanted to go with them!
Aside from her father and her Uncle An Mo, she didn’t have any playmates in the Upper Domain, and now even Uncle An Mo was following Auntie Su to the lower domain!
What was she supposed to do now?
Duo Duo kicked her tiny legs and wailed hysterically, her little fists clutching her father’s robes.
Shen Mochen knew that if his daughter stayed here watching the carriage pack up for even a second longer, her heart would break completely. Seeing her cry like this shattered his own soul into a thousand pieces.
Hoping to distract her, Shen Mochen quickly carried the weeping little girl toward the secluded back garden of the Heavenly God Estate.
He paced back and forth along the quiet, stone-paved paths under the shaded trees, softly humming and rocking her in his arms to make her forget about the departing carriage.
Yet Duo Duo wept so hard that her tiny chest heaved with piteous hiccups.
By the time her loud wails gradually quieted into soft, lingering whimpers, the poor little thing had finally cried herself to sleep from absolute exhaustion.
Shen Mochen stopped in his tracks, looking down at his precious daughter.
Her delicate, tender little face was flushed bright red like a boiled shrimp, her long eyelashes still wet with heavy teardrops. It was such a heartbreaking, pitiful sight that Shen Mochen felt a sharp, stabbing ache in his chest.
Moving as gently as possible, he walked over to a peaceful stone pavilion nestled among the flowers. He laid his sleeping daughter down on the smooth, soft bench, carefully adjusting his outer robe over her tiny shoulders as a blanket.
Seeing that Duo Duo was fast asleep, Shen Mochen decided it was best to slip out of the Heavenly God Estate immediately before she woke up and saw the empty estate, which would only trigger another round of devastating tears.
He turned around and quickly headed back toward the main pavilion to retrieve her small travel bag.
It took him less than a minute to grab the bag and rush right back to the garden.
However, the moment he stepped into the stone pavilion, his steps froze.
Standing right beside the bench was a figure, reaching out a soft, delicate hand that was just inches away from touching Duo Duo’s tear-stained, flushed little cheek!
In a flash of terrifying speed, Shen Mochen’s shadow flickered!
PA—!
Before that hand could graze his daughter’s skin, Shen Mochen’s large, iron-like fingers shot out and clamped down hard around the slender wrist, stopping the gesture dead in mid-air.
Shen Mochen’s handsome face instantly hardened into a terrifyingly frost-bitten mask.
His dark eyes glinted with a sharp, murderous light as he glared at the intruder, his voice dropping into an icy, dangerous growl.
