Su Qinglan was busy at home when a beastman suddenly came looking for her.
"Sister Su Qinglan, someone is looking for you."
Su Qinglan looked up in surprise. "Looking for me?"
"Yes. He is waiting outside."
Su Qinglan got up and walked out into the courtyard. A beastman guard stood by the entrance, and beside him was a familiar figure.
Rao.
The moment Rao saw her, he scratched his head awkwardly, shifting his weight from foot to foot. The guard who brought him over turned around and departed, leaving Rao alone with Su Qinglan.
Looking slightly nervous, Rao cleared his throat. "Is... the offer from yesterday still valid?"
Su Qinglan raised an eyebrow. "You want to work?"
Rao immediately nodded. "Yes. I want to work if you’ll have me."
Su Qinglan smiled gently. "Of course. But you have to behave yourself. If you dare to steal anything from the farm again, I’ll be the first one to kick you out."
Rao immediately stood straight as a board. "I would never dare to steal again!" He hesitated for a second before adding with earnest seriousness, "But... you have to give me good food."
Su Qinglan almost laughed. "Good food?"
"My three females can’t starve." His expression grew solemn. "They’re pregnant. They need to eat well."
Su Qinglan nodded warmly. "I understand." She then outlined the compensation terms. "I’ll give you ten jins of vegetables every month, along with ten jins of wheat and ten jins of rice."
Rao’s eyes slowly widened.
"And you’ll receive five jin of meat every week."
His eyes grew even wider. "Five... what?"
Su Qinglan froze. "Five jins."
Rao stared blankly at her. "What is a jin?"
Su Qinglan was stunned. Everyone in Dragon Beast City understood numbers and basic standard measurements...jins were commonly used when distributing food. This was her first time encountering someone completely unfamiliar with the term.
Before she could figure out how to explain it, Shi Feng stepped forward smoothly.
"He probably hasn’t had much contact with other beastmen or larger settlements," Shi Feng observed thoughtfully.
"Literacy and standardized knowledge are lower among weaker, isolated beastman groups. They don’t have the same educational or trading systems that we do."
Rao scratched his head in embarrassment. "I really don’t understand."
Su Qinglan rubbed her forehead, searching for a clear visual. Her eyes landed on a large woven basket nearby, and she pointed at it directly.
"Forget the numbers. I’ll give you this much, five times."
Rao stared at the basket, then at Su Qinglan. "Five baskets?"
"Yes."
His eyes lit up instantly. "Then I understand!"
Su Qinglan finally relaxed. "Good."
Rao nodded happily, overwhelmed by the prospect. To him, that amount of food sounded like enough to survive on for an entire year. But after bouncing excitedly on his heels for a moment, he suddenly froze.
His expression turned deeply suspicious. "Wait."
Su Qinglan looked at him. "What?"
