"Professor Carstairs?" Charlotte managed a faint smile.
"Are you really quitting the project?" Judd asked, his eyes fixed on her.
She crossed her arms and shrugged. "As far as I'm concerned, the nanomedicine research is complete. I just won't be participating in any of the follow-up projects."
Judd stepped closer. "Are you really okay with quitting?"
Was she?
Honestly, no. It was infuriating to be dismissed because of someone else's whim. That was the cruel reality of the world—capital was king, and even with all her skills, she could still be cast aside.
She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "That's why it's so frustrating. I gave up being the pampered heiress of the Rayburn family to come here and be pushed around. It's not something I'm okay with at all."
Judd froze, his lips pressed into a thin line.
Daphne emerged from the hall looking for Judd, only to find the exact scene she had feared. "Judd!"
She walked over and turned to Charlotte with a cool smile. "Miss Sterling, I hear you're withdrawing from the project. How clever of you to save face. I suppose it's understandable. Your former mother-in-law lost her son and is taking it out on you. Anyone would find that unbearable. However, since this is a private matter between you and her, there's no need to drag my son into it. He has no reason to intervene on your behalf."
"Mother," Judd said, his tone sharp with displeasure.
Charlotte met Daphne's gaze with a calm smile. "Mrs. Carstairs, my name is Charlotte, but..." She paused for a beat. "My last name is Rayburn."
Daphne looked confused.
"The Rayburn family is in no way inferior to the Carstairs. I hardly need to ask anyone else to intervene for me, do I?"
It took a moment for the meaning to sink in. Just as Daphne was about to retort, Charlotte turned and walked away without a backward glance.
Judd's expression fell.
…
A few days later.
"Did you guys hear? Dr. Sterling resigned."
"No way. She was doing so well. Why would she suddenly quit?"
