The Lowes' faces were grim. Tobias, in particular, was seething, stuck between the humiliation of his injury and the insult of her past. He had planned to teach her a lesson once they were married, but now, hearing she'd been married before, he found himself both unwilling to marry her and yet furious at being denied his revenge.
Mrs. Lowe felt utterly played and dropped all pretense of civility. "Mr. Rayburn, what do you propose we do? The Lowe family refuses to be taken for fools. My son has never been married! Marrying a divorced heiress from the Rayburn family? We'd be the laughingstock of the city!"
Mr. Rayburn's expression subtly hardened. "So the Lowe family refuses to be made a fool, but our family should just accept it?"
"But your granddaughter assaulted my son—"
Before Mr. Rayburn could reply, Quincy spoke up, his attitude completely changed. "That was after your son tried to drug her. If you ask me, the Rayburns are not a family you Lowes can just push around."
Kate stared at him in disbelief, nudging him with her elbow, but he ignored her, his gaze fixed on Hulda.
Hulda met his eyes for a moment before looking down, lost in her own thoughts.
Charlotte was surprised by Quincy's sudden change of heart but quickly composed herself.
Mrs. Lowe was incensed, slamming her hand on the table as she stood up. "And which eye did you see my son drugging her with?"
"We can just check the purchase records for that kind of drug, can't we?" Quincy said with an air of someone who couldn't be bothered to expose a lie.
"In that case, it seems the Lowe family owes our family an explanation," Wesley said calmly, a faint smile on his lips.
Mrs. Lowe's face turned ashen. She bit her lip and shot a venomous glare at Quincy and Kate. "Fine. So you two teamed up to make a fool of us? I won't forget this!"
She stormed out, dragging Tobias with her.
Kate started to follow them, but she froze when she met Mr. Rayburn's sharp gaze, sinking back into her seat.
After a long silence, he spoke to Kate. "The marriage with the Lowes was originally arranged for Amy. Stop your scheming and have her start preparing for the wedding."
With that, Mr. Rayburn had Hulda help him upstairs.
Mrs. Lowe was stunned for a second. "What do you mean, caused trouble again? Your son is the one who was wronged—"
"Wronged? Then why has The Lowe Group's stock suddenly plummeted? I had just secured a major overseas deal with Mr. Evander! If that deal had gone through next year, our company would have been second only to the Rayburns! And now he's pulled out! You'd better ask your precious son what the hell you two did!"
Emmett's furious shouting left Mrs. Lowe speechless.
Even Tobias, sitting beside her, heard every word, his face turning pale.
Mrs. Lowe stammered, "No… it's not… Tobias and I just…"
"We'll talk when you get back," Emmett said, his voice cold as ice, and hung up before she could explain.
Mrs. Lowe's anger was completely extinguished by the phone call. Had she and Tobias truly crossed someone they couldn't afford to?
