Mr. Rayburn’s sharp command cut through the argument. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and when he opened them again, the pain was replaced by a sharp, profound resolve. “Until the reports are in, no one is to jump to conclusions. Caleb,” he said, his voice quiet but firm, “I want you to hire the best lawyers and private investigators. Cooperate with the police, but also run your own investigation.”
Silence fell over the living room once more, this time thick with tension and unspoken currents.
Watching the scene unfold, Charlotte felt a chill rise from the pit of her stomach. Kate’s death was like a stone thrown into a still lake, shattering the fragile peace of the Rayburn family.
Soon, people began to disperse from the living room.
Charlotte followed her father and brother, her mind lost in thought. Wesley called her name twice before she finally heard him on the third try.
She looked up, realizing she had fallen far behind them, and hurried to catch up.
“You’ve been completely out of it since we left the living room,” Wesley said, his voice gentle with concern. “You can tell me what’s on your mind. Don’t keep it all bottled up.”
Charlotte hesitated for a few seconds. “Aunt Kate called me earlier today.”
Wesley stopped, his brow furrowing. “Let’s talk in the car.”
On the drive back to Midvale Estates, Charlotte recounted the phone call. After hearing everything, Sean let out a heavy sigh. “I can’t believe she’d go to such lengths. What kind of secret could be worth risking her life for?”
Charlotte wondered the same thing. “She left something for me at her salon. She must have known something was going to happen, so whatever she left is likely evidence related to her death.”
Sean said nothing more.
Wesley, who had been listening quietly from the driver’s seat, now had a much clearer picture of the situation.
…
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
After the receptionist left, Charlotte idly flipped through a magazine. A short while later, a woman with immaculate makeup approached her. “You must be the client Kate referred. I’m so sorry to keep you waiting.”
Charlotte rose slowly. “It’s no problem. Kate mentioned she left some things here in a safe for me to pick up.”
“She did store something with us, yes. But she specified that only a family member could retrieve it. Are you her…?”
“She’s my aunt. I’m a Rayburn, too.”
