“Wait, Nannie Lane is your Uncle Caleb’s secret partner? And they have a kid together?!”
Back in the studio, Lilith’s shock at the trending news was just as great as Charlotte’s.
Charlotte had known that her Uncle Caleb had a child with a celebrity, but she never knew who the woman was. Today was the first she’d heard of it.
Nannie Lane had started her career at sixteen, spending eight years in minor roles until, at twenty-four, she shot to fame with the film Daisy. But that same film also made her one of the most controversial actresses in the industry.
She had sacrificed a great deal for the role, which included full-frontal nudity. Because of that film, she became the face of provocative posters, a fantasy for men and a rival for women. She took a three-year hiatus from acting before making a comeback, and although she returned as an A-lister, the “bombshell” label and the controversy that came with it never truly went away.
“Charlotte, you’re ignoring me!” Lilith pouted.
Charlotte snapped back to reality with an awkward laugh. “I’m not ignoring you. I just found out today, same as you. I’m just as surprised.”
Lilith leaned on the table. “Didn’t your Uncle Caleb tell you?”
Charlotte sighed. “My relationship with Uncle Caleb isn’t exactly close enough for him to share that kind of personal business with me.”
“True…” Lilith propped her head in her hands. “But the reason your uncle hasn’t made things official with her is because the Rayburn family objects to her being in show business, right?”
“You even know about that?”
“Of course,” Lilith said seriously. “I know this guy, his dad is a family friend. He was dating some actress, lavishing her with cars, apartments… spending millions a year on her. But in the end, they broke up because his father refused to let him marry someone from ‘the industry.’ I’ve seen it a million times with these rich kids.”
