Judd Carstairs entered the room, and Charlotte Sterling retrieved an ice pack and gauze. She wrapped the ice pack in the gauze and handed it to him. He took it and pressed it to his face. "Aren't you two divorced? He still has people guarding this place?"
Noticing her hesitation, Judd sensed something. "Did something happen?"
"Jonathan Pembroke came looking for me." Charlotte hadn't planned on mentioning it; after all, Judd and Jonathan were good friends, and she didn't want to put him in a difficult position.
But Judd seemed to have guessed it already. He frowned. "I knew it."
She blinked. "You knew?"
"I just came from Jonathan's place." Judd switched hands to hold the ice pack. "I haven't seen him in a year, and he's become completely unhinged."
"You know about the Pembrokes arranging an engagement with Genevieve Howard, right?"
He hummed in agreement. "I do."
Charlotte pressed her lips together and continued, "Then did you know Genevieve and Jonathan are blood relatives?"
Judd fell silent for a long moment, clearly surprised she knew. He nodded. "Very few people are aware of that. Even my parents don't know."
"But Evander Howard knows. Does anyone else in the Howard family besides him and the Jensen matriarch know about this?" Charlotte was completely bewildered.
Judd rubbed the edge of the ice pack, his voice turning somber. "When the old patriarch of the Howard family was still alive, he suppressed the matter completely. After all, Mrs. Pembroke's origins were scandalous. It's completely normal that the rest of the Howards are kept in the dark."
He paused and looked at Charlotte. "But the Pembrokes know."
The Pembrokes knew the truth but still agreed to Jonathan marrying Genevieve. Clearly, they had no intention of genuinely allying with Jensen Howard and his wife.
Otherwise, once the marriage was finalized, the revelation that Jonathan and Genevieve were blood-related cousins would bring no benefit to Jensen.
Evander knew all about this twisted dynamic between the two families yet chose not to intervene...
A sudden sense of relief washed over Charlotte.
He must have been prepared all along.
